  4. The Power of a Pause! Your rate (speed at which you talk) is critically important. • We must change our rate and pitch at the right times to hold the attention of our audience. • We must use the “ p-a-u-s-e ” • Why? • Because it can add emotion and strength to your speech. It is like a suspenseful scene in a movie!

  5. The Influence of a Question! What is the purpose of a question? • To get an answer • Get people to think • Get people to change • Get people to learn • Much more When giving speeches, a question can have the largest impact if well-thought and planned. • Instead of telling people what to do, get them to think about their own thoughts.

  6. Examples If Sias asked the students “How could we improve our campus efficiently”, what would they say? Where did humans come from? Can pollution have a long lasting harm on the health of people? What is the most evident purpose of life? If abortion causes mental problems in mothers for their whole life, then why do we allow it to happen? • It is highly important to use questions as the speaker and as the audience.

Understanding Nonverbal Language There are two perspectives to understand nonverbal language actions through: • The perspective of the audience • Who is the audience? • (age, culture, demographics, interests, life, morals, beliefs, etc) • What is the medium? (TV, radio, paper, face) • The perspective of the speaker • What do you want your speech to do? (reason) • Inform, persuade, instruct, encourage, teach, train, change, question,

Activity We will have one volunteer come up to the front and speak about what could be improved at Sias. • In the background I will put an emotion. • Once you see the emotion, I want you, the audience, to show it on your face and in your nonverbal gestures. • Lets practice: show me your happy • Mad, excited, confused, bored

  9. Persuasive Speech What does the word persuade mean? • To be persuasive is the… • action of persuading someone to accept, like, and/or agree with your thoughts • Intelligence, creativity, and evidence are the main areas of persuasion • Notforce, power, or authority

  10. WHEN TO PERSUADE…?! What are some examples of when people would want to use a persuasive speech? • To improve or better something • Environment, safety, management, government • To prove their side, idea, or plan is the best • Marketing idea, design, pollution solution, food, knowledge, any system or action, sports, music, etc • To createchange or difference in something • Better health, safer lifestyle, newer ideas, modern, debates, lawsuits, etc.

Main Parts of a Persuasive Speech The Introduction must truly grasp the attention of the audience. • BE STRONG and CONFIDENT • Give emotion to your speech • Serious, sad, put us in awe, excitement, facts, questions, quotes, history, the future, present time, happy, dangerous, risky, BE INTERESTING The Conclusion must truly persuade or make the audience really THINK! Change the minds, or get them to at least question their thoughts.

  12. Persuasive Speech Example • TO BE PROVIDED IN THE FUTURE • Look for ideas online to learn more for your self… • For we can learn in the classroom, but deeper understanding of a subject involves our own effort to work at learning more about something outside of the classroom.

  13. Example Topics These are just some examples. They do not need to be used, they are just ideas. • Pollution • Abortion • Health • Smoking • Gun Laws in America • International Trade Laws • North Korea: Nuclear Abilities • Limitless MORE!!!

Persuasive Speech Requirements • The speech must be by yourself • The speech should only be between 4:30 – 5:30 minutes. • The speech should have an inspiring introduction • The speech should include 3-5 main supporting details for your persuasion • Extra details can be sub-supporting details • The speech should have a strong intelligent closing

One-on-One Time I am going to use the ending minutes to let you think about your topic and information. • Think about your speech • Take time to brainstorm some ideas and main points to help your speech • I will be in the back if you want to talk to me one-on-one for a few minutes about any questions. • If you do not have any questions, then you are welcome to leave
