  2. Have you ever had a burning question that you just can’t answer?

  3. Like…. • What would happen to Mr Toomer if we gave him 4 double espresso coffees every morning for a month? • Why does my pee go green when I eat asparagus? • Does using big headphones make us go deaf?

  4. Or? • Can BSL afford to move out of its present location? • Can a cockroach really live if you cut off it’s head? • Why are Men from Mars and Women from Venus?

  5. Or? • Why can’t people admit when they are wrong? • What did Ernest Shackleton mean by “It’s all about the journey, not the destination”? • Why are IB students so well prepared for Research Projects when at University?

  6. And the Answer is? • The Extended Essay • But what is it?

The Extended Essay is • Compulsory for All Diploma Students, • Externally assessed, • A piece of independent research, • Chosen from a list a approved subjects (ideally one of your 6), • Presented as a formal piece of scholarship containing no more than 4000 words, • The result of approximately 40 hours work, • Concluded with a short interview with the supervisor. • Final EE will be due in on Monday 31st October 2011 and cannot be amended after this date.

Extended EssayResponsibilities of the Student • Choose a topic • Observe the regulations (These will be given to students via their pen drive) • Meet deadlines • Acknowledge all sources of information and ideas in an approved manner (we use Harvard Referencing) • Start work early • Think very carefully about their Research Question • Plan how, when and where they will find material • Plan a Schedule for Researching and writing the essay • Record sources as their research progresses (do NOT leave it until the end) • Have a clear structure for the essay before they begin to write • Check & proofread the final version • Make sure that all basic criteria are met

Extended EssayThings to avoid • Choose a research question that is too broad, vague, narrow, difficult or inappropriate • Forget to analyse the Research Question • Ignore the assessment criteria • Collecting material that is irrelevant • Use the Internet uncritically • Plagiarize • Merely describe or report (evidence must be used to support the argument) • Repeat the Introduction in the conclusion • Cite sources that are not used • Go over 4000 words • A Grade E as this means you have to get 28 points to get your diploma.
