  1. Death in Darfur By: Carl Valentine 6/1/12 Period E

  2. Location • There is a fight going on in the Darfur region of Sudan. (Sudan is in Africa) A map of Sudan showing the Darfur region.

  3. The Conflict • Arab supremacists are killing African non-Muslims. • These Arab supremacists are also in control of the government, so this is a very delicate situation.

  4. The Conflict cont. • However, rebel groups have formed amongst the non-Muslim Africans, and have struck back against the government. • With all of the war and injustices being committed, these events are being considered genocide.

  5. Genocide = the deliberate and systematic extermination of a national, racial, political, or cultural group Adolf Hitler, who led a genocide in Europe against the Jews early in the 1900’s

  6. Causes • Darfur was once controlled by Britain. When Britain gave up Darfur, they left Arabs in charge of the country.

  7. Causes cont. • Thirty-three years later, a group known as the National Islamic Front (NIF) came to power. Janjaweed militia

  8. Causes cont. • The NIF used the Janjaweed, a Arab militia, to kill non-Muslim Africans in the southern part of the country. • Soon, two rebel groups emerged. They are the Sudanese Liberation Army and the Justice and Equality Movement. The two allied in 2003. Omar al-Bashir, an NIF leader

  9. The Janjaweed • The Janjaweed is a militia group consisting of Muslims. They are supported by the NIF run government of Sudan. • The word ‘Janjaweed’ means “hordes”, “ruffians”, and “devil on horseback.” They use any means possible to commit genocide against non-Muslim, including torture and rape.

  10. The Rebels • The two rebel groups are the Sudanese Liberation Army and the Justice and Equality Movement. They allied in 200, and after their attacks on the government and the Janjaweed, a counter-attack was launched by the government on any non-Muslim communities who had links to the rebels. Sudanese Liberation Army soldiers

  11. Current Events • On July 9th, 2011, a new country was born. • The Republic of South Sudan separated from Sudan to become an independent nation.

  12. The Republic of South Sudan • The Republic’s separation shows the want of the people to have separated from the north and all of its problems. • After it’s succession, the Republic was bombed by Sudan, pushing the neighboring nations closer to a dispute.

  13. Oil • There is currently a dispute over oil between the two nations, each claiming that they deserve the right to the oil. • A war between Sudan and South Sudan would be great for the people of Darfur, because then Sudan would have even more problems to worry about besides it’s violent internal affairs.

  14. Genocide? • Are the actions in Darfur and Sudan genocide? • According to a report by CNN, this is a very real possibility. “Most attacks were…directed against civilians…government forces and militias conducted indiscriminate attacks…on a widespread and systematic basis…therefore…amount to crimes against humanity…The element of genocidal intent appears to be missing…as far as…central government authorities are concerned.” (CNN-Darfur Not Genocide, Jan-Feb 2005)

  15. Genocide? (cont.) • So since genocidal intent seems to be missing, it isn’t genocide? • However despite these reports, the actions in Darfur appear to be genocide through the eyes of the world.

  16. Genocide? (cont.) • So what do you think? • Are the crimes that are occurring in Darfur genocide?

  17. Possible Solutions • The only ways that peace can be found in Darfur are as follows: • Intervention from an outside nation (Republic?) • Peace agreement • Overthrow of government by rebel groups

  18. Not Fun Facts… • The government of Sudan commits heinous crimes against its people. The Janjaweed terrorize non-Muslim citizens. Since 2003, the Janjaweed and the Sudanese government have done the following:

  19. Not Fun Facts… (cont.) • 300,000 dead • 2.6 million displaced • 1 generation of school aged children who have never had a safe place to call home • Unknown number of women abducted, raped, and abused (Darfur Facts) A starving child who is negatively affected by organized starvation movements by the Sudanese government
