Pehla Kadam & CHWO IIM Calcutta. What is “ Pehla Kadam ”?. Its an effort to bring some smiles on the faces of the unfortunate few A small initiative by a group of students from IIM Calcutta who works in collaboration with Community Health Welfare Organization(CHWO).

What is “PehlaKadam”? • Its an effort to bring some smiles on the faces of the unfortunate few • A small initiative by a group of students from IIM Calcutta who works in collaboration with Community Health Welfare Organization(CHWO) • Community Health Welfare Organization(CHWO ) is a recognized NGO operated by ShriShyamalendu Das, who works in administration department at IIM Calcutta.
Flagship event during Carpe Diem • During Carpe Diem (IIMC's Annual Cultural festival), on 29th of January 2010, 350 little kids came to the IIMC campus from 3 NGOs (STCH , SPCI and BehalaNaboPrayas). • Kids were treated with a day of fun and entertainment through various interactions and cultural performances. • Kids were given a stage to perform – there was dance, music, plays and mimes • Event was held at the IIM Calcutta’s Auditorium. • A movie screening was organized for the kids • Snacks and lunch arrangements were made for them and all of them were given return gifts in the end
Some snapshots from the event • Painting Competition for Kids. • Performances by the kids • Skit played by the children from the “Society for Protection of Children in India (SPCI)”, an NGO for girls • “Group Dance and Mime” presented by Behala “Naboproyas”, an NGO for the mentally challenged kids. • The day also witnessed a “Poem Recitation” by an 8 year old kid a “Painting” competition for BehalaNaboPrayas kids. • Performances by the campus band JBS BaroC.
Visit to a village school in Majilpur • Organised a one day visit to the school 3 hours from Joka in the interior of the village • The children were given Snacks and small gift sets • Volunteers spent a day with the kids played with them, talked to them • Sports items (footballs, basketballs) and stationary items were gifted to the school.
Naboprayas , an NGO, Stall during the Dramatics Cell’s City play • Helped the NGO, Naboprayas, to put up a stall during the Dramatics cell’s first outside play (organized in Kolkata city) • The items made by the differently abled children of the NGO were put up on display • The products were really liked by the audiences and there were significant sales
Computer Centre for Rural/Poor Kids by CHWO • Recently CHWO opened a computer Centre for rural / poor kids. • Poor Children will be provided free Computer education at the centre. • PehlaKadam worked with CHWO for opening the centre. • PehlaKadam plans to provide volunteers (IIMC Students) for teaching at this centre. • PehlaKadam plans to support the infrastructure of the computer centre through received funds.
Way Forward……. • Support CHWO’s computer centre Infrastructure and provide them with Student volunteers for teaching purposes. • Organizing a visit by the schools from the nearby NGO to the institute on the independence day – Conducting a painting competition for them • Conducting the flagship event – having performances by the children on campus • Organizing Picnics for Orphan kids. • Organizing more trips to village schools and other such places • Taking it a step further by visiting Old age home • Make our efforts sustainable in long run.
