  2. Discussion • How are you using your facilities to recruit & retain students? • What results are you achieving?

  3. Exercise 1: Perspectives Identify the Needs/ Expectations of facilities for your stakeholder group in the recruitment & retention of students. In essence, what are they looking for from facilities? Their focus? • CFOs/ Presidents • Provosts/ Faculty • VP/Dean of Students/ Admissions • Students

  4. Exercise 1: Competing Perspectives? Perspectives in COMMON? Perspectives that DIFFER? What can we learn? What can you apply? How would you measure?

  12. Why important? Why care? • Institutional responsibility to help students succeed • by investing in programs and projects to: • help identify at-risk students, • improve academic support, and • expand student services.

WHY? • Great need for “college” degree • Cost to individual student never higher • Support families • More jobs for B.S. & A.A. degree • Only 1/3 jobs open with H.S. degree • Long term financial payoff • Public support declined precipitously • Tuition soared • Student debt soared (avg $30,100) “Important to understand & modernize space to meet institutional goals!”

  15. Student Success So now, how important is it for your institution to define student success and for Facilities to understand it, learn the fine art of collaboration, and modernize space to meet that goal?

  18. MINDSET • How you view the world and the other people in it • The lens through which you see your work and your relationships

  19. What’s your Mindset? Inward mindset: • focus only on one’s individual goals and objectives • are blind to what others need or want • see others in relation to themselves • might work incredibly hard for their organization, but fail to recognize how their actions are affecting others.

  20. What’s your Mindset? Outward mindset: • understanding that others have their own goals and needs • a focus on achieving the results of the organization as a whole • take the priorities of others into account when considering their own goals • are aware they might inadvertently get in the way of another individual or department • seek to limit others’ harm

Collaborative Mindset Challenge for leaders in higher education: • how to incentivize collaborative behavior • drive innovation that meets the needs of the country and of students • helping more students access opportunities for higher education • attain degrees and skills to advance their own, and the nation's, economic success.

Collaborative Mindset Requires… • A new kind of collaboration that is: • intentional, • self-forming, and • based on shared values and goals. • Bringing together institutions with limited competitive interactionnecessitates thoughtful coordination to bring more value to each institution than is taken from it.   26. Rebranding/Changing the Narrative One of the biggest challenges on campus from a Facilities & Capital Planning perspective might be rebranding the terms “deferred maintenance” and “capital renewal” with the objective of student success in mind.

  27. Does the term Deferred Maintenance work?

  28. What’s a Chief Financial Officer hear when you use the term ‘deferred maintenance’? Why haven’t you been taking care of this? Who deferred this? What’s the back log? How much is this going to cost?

Framed differently, do these questions get asked? • If we take care of DM - how does it help the students? • How can the institution be stronger with this? • What’s the cost/ benefit to solving this? • What’s our ROI? • What are we achieving our institution’s business goals with this investment?

  30. What about your FacilitiesDepartment? Facilities needs to rebrand Deferred Maintenance and use more current terminology revitalization, modernization, or optimization.

Higher Education Rebranding… • Pay attention to what the public says about you and respond with products and services that counteract those accusations. • Better packaging can make a brand more appealing • No need to necessarily change a logo; change the experience. Your customer and community matters, Facilities needs to be collaborative and have an outward mindset towards the institutions goals and perspectives. When your perspective students come to campus, do they take a tour of the faculty or the facilities? The student experience needs to be exceptional, there are other (cheaper) options.

  42. And one more… • Students want a better lifestyle and will respond to institutions they believe will help them achieve their goal.
