  1. Forms and Norms 7th Grade Internet Safety Lesson

  2. Forms and Norms • When we communicate using the Internet, cell phones, or mobile devices, it is sometimes hard to know what is appropriate to say or write, given our different audiences. • There are norms among people that shape how they communicate online — vocabulary, slang, sentence structure, spelling, grammar, punctuation, tone, etc. • Norm: standards and expectations • Form: things of a similar type that are components of a group. • Common forms of digital communication are IM, chat, email, and text

  3. Good Norms • ....Get right to the point – some people have many messages to read. • ....Use smileys, or emoticons, to make your message clearer. • ....Stay calm when you get a rude message. Don’t respond to an angry message. A flame war–battling with hot, angry words – can lead to more and more unresolved drama.

  4. No-No’s • Don’t type in UPPERCASE – it means you’re shouting. • ....Avoid slang or rude language. • ....Check your spelling, grammar, and punctuation. • ....Think twice before using sarcasm. Without hearing your tone of voice, or seeing your facial expression, it’s nearly impossible to know that a message is sarcastic.

  5. How To Set Up Your Paper • For Transcript 1,2, and 3 Answer the Following Questions in Complete Sentences: • 1. Who are the communicators and what clues help you know? • 2. What form (ex. Text, Email) of communication might they be using and what norms are they using? • 3. What is the purpose of their communication?

  6. Partner Activity • On the same sheet of paper, work with a partner to write a text message to a friend using acronyms (ex. LOL) and other teen slang. Keep it appropriate for school! • Then translate what you wrote into proper English so that your science teacher would understand what you said.
