  2. Individuals: are the objects described by a set of data. Individuals may be people, but they may also by animals or things. • Variable: is any characteristic of an individual. A variable can take different values for different individuals.

  3. When you meet a new set of data, ask yourself the following key questions. • Who are the individuals described by the data? How many individuals are there? • What are the variable? In what units is each variable recorded? • Why were the data gathered? Do we hope to answer some specific questions? • When, where, how and by whom were the data produced? Where did the data come from? Can you trust the data?

  4. Categorical and Quantitative Variables. • Categorical variable places an individual into one of several groups or categories. • Quantitative variable takes numerical values for which arithmetic operations such as adding and averaging make sense.

  5. Distribution • Distribution: of a variable tells us what values the variable takes and how often it takes these values.

  6. So you wear seat belts? • Each year the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration conducts an observational study on seat belt use.
