  1. The Full Gospel Church May 17, 2009 Vol. XIII Number 16 God Gave His Only Son For Us.

  2. John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. God so loved the world,God loves us so much that he was willing to sacrifice his only begotten son for us. Those who believe in him should not perish. There are many who change the word should into the word shall. If shall was the original word, then Satan who believes in Jesus would not perish. If you believe in Jesus Christ, you should be saved, but you must put that belief into action. Many believe but are not born-again Christians who live a sanctified life in Jesus Christ. Thus, believing in Jesus Christ is the first step to salvation. As Jesus told Nicodemus, “You must be born again.”

  3. Jesus Teaches Nicodemus John 3 1 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: 2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. 3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? 5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. 8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. 9 Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be? 10 Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things? John 3 11 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. 12 If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things? 13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: 15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

  4. Who Was Nicodemus? • He was a Pharisee or what we call a lawyer. • He was a member of the Sanhedrin what would be considered a justice on the Supreme Court. • He definitely was a ruler of Israel. • Nicodemus was a man who was at the epitome of his career. Like a member of the Supreme Court, he could not go any higher. • There has been a lot of discussion about Nicodemus coming to Jesus at night, but none have thought that his other duties required him to work during the day as a member of the Sanhedrin.

  5. Nicodemus’ Opening Comment We know that, thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. • First Nicodemus uses his position by saying, “We know...” Thus I feel that Nicodemus came to Jesus by night as a representative of the Sanhedrin. • Next he acknowledges that Jesus is a teacher from God because nobody can do the miracles that Jesus was doing. Jesus was already healing the terminally ill and such causing a big commotion in the city. • God had to be with him and directing his teaching and actions.

  6. Jesus’ Response Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. • Nicodemus and the Sanhedrin believe that Jesus is a teacher from God, but does not believe that he is the Christ. • Jesus responds to Nicodemus’ opening statement by telling him that he must be born again to even be able to see the kingdom of God or heaven. • This initiates a discussion that leads Jesus to tell Nicodemus that he needed to be born of the Spirit and of the water • Water = Baptism • Spirit = Filled with Holy Ghost • This was totally new theology to Nicodemus, for he thought that you were born a Jew meant access to heaven just as many churches teach today. There are still a few who tell you that you need to be born again. • You need to be born again just like Nicodemus needed it. • Repentance: Ask Jesus to forgive you and tell him that you are sorry for your sins. This is not like a hung-over drunk repenting in the morning only to get drunk again. • Baptism in Jesus Name. • Be filled with the Holy Ghost.

  7. Jesus’ Summation For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. • Jesus summed up his discussion with Nicodemus by telling him that those who believe in Jesus Christ “should” be saved. Jesus was very careful with his choice of words and did not use the word shall. • When you believe, you should want to be born both of the water and of the Spirit. When you believe you should repent of all of your wicked sins and permanently reject your former self. • Only Jesus can cause this change. Start by believing and repenting.
