English III November 4, 2013 Mr. Houghteling “It’s a Make it Yours Monday!”
AGENDA • Your kennings! • Oral reading: The aftermath of “The Battle with Grendel”—”Grendel’s Mother!” • CLOZE passage—yours! • Imagery interpretation. • “The Battle with Grendel’s Mother.”
Oral Reading: the aftermath • Read pages 45-46: “Grendel’s Mother.”
Creating a CLOZE passage • Two people: a RECORDER and a RESEARCHER. • Make a list of the most important plot events that happen in this passage (what stands out?) • What are the key words (probably NOUNS!) that stand out in the passage? Make a list of these.
Creating a CLOZE passage • The Recorder writes the passage; the Researcher uses the text to find the main ideas and keywords. Work together to create a passage that SUMMARIZES the most important information. • Then for each sentence, delete the one word or phrase that is the key to understanding the sentence. • Use the CLOZE 1 and CLOZE 2 passages to help you. • You can do it!
Homework • Imagery Interpretation • Complete the handout fully for tomorrow.
