Transportation costs for frequent deliveries from a DC to customers can be dramatically reduced by optimized mode selection and load consolidation. Some Details (… not just a bunch of equations) • Tool runs in Excel • Algorithm-based for good but not necessarily optimal solutions • Includes customer constraints • Days and time of day deliveries can be made • Includes constraints of TL carriers • No more than 2 stops • Stops < 50 miles apart • Interfaces with order entry system so data automatically collected Broader Applicability (Where the results can the be used; keys to adapting) • Can be used if multiple shipments are sent LTL or parcel each day from a single location • Requires distances between all customers be determined and an input file created • Model must be given the order information
