what are effective microorganisms

Developed by Dr. TeruoHiga, Professor of Horticulture in Okinawa, Japan in 1968

  • A mixed culture of microorganisms that “work together with the beneficial in the area to which it is added, creating a synergy among microorganisms and larger forms of life”
  • Culture consists of 80 species of microbes
    • Lactic Acid Bacteria
    • Photosynthetic Bacteria
    • Yeasts
    • Actinomycetes
    • Fungi
What are Effective Microorganisms?
different varieties of em

EM Bokashi

  • EM-1
    • Plant food
    • Biofertilizer
    • Livestock odor control
    • Bioremediation
  • Pro EM-1 Daily Probiotic Cleanse
Different varieties of EM
em in composting

EM Bokashi

    • Two Steps
      • Fermentation: Up to 3 weeks, anaerobic or partially anaerobic
      • Soil Fertilizer: Fermented compost is buried for 1-6 months and creates fertilizer
    • Small scale (kitchen wastes)
    • Large scale (agricultural, commercial food preparation)
EM in Composting
microbial inoculants for small scale composting of putrescible kitchen wastes

Mature compost,

sawdust, paper, grass

clippings, and kitchen

waste were subject to

thermo composting,

with or without EM

inoculation, followed by

vermicomposting

em as a biofertilizer

EM-1

    • Replace the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers
      • Greater crop yields
      • Less harmful effects on humans and the environment
EM as a Biofertilizer
how effective are effective microorganisms em results from a field study in temperate climate

Four year cultivation study with organic farming practices

  • Seven different parameters
    • EM (spray)
    • EM with bokashi compost
    • EM with bokashicompost and cattle manure
    • Treatments 1-3 with sterilized EM
    • Water

Significant differences between the untreated control and the fields with EM + Bokashi

No significant differences between living EM and sterilized EM
