  2. What Jesus Taught About Hell

  3. Introduction • Every thing Jesus taught is important • Jn. 12:48 • “He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.”

  4. Introduction Although many now deny the reality of hell---we would do well to consider what Jesus taught on this important subject

  5. “Gehenna” --- Hell • Gehenna was taken from the Valley of Hinnom (also called the valley of the Sons of Hinnom) which was just outside Jerusalem

  6. Neh. 11:30 …And they dwelt from Beer-sheba unto the valley of Hinnom.

  7. “Gehenna” --- Hell • It was the place where idolatrous Jews burned their children as they worshipped the pagan god, Molech

  8. 2 Ch. 28:3 Moreover he (Ahaz) burnt incense in the valley of the son of Hinnom, and burnt his children in the fire, after the abominations of the heathen whom the LORD had cast out before the children of Israel.

  9. 2 Ch. 33:6 And he (Manasseh) caused his children to pass through the fire in the valley of the son of Hinnom: also he observed times, and used enchantments, and used witchcraft, and dealt with a familiar spirit, and with wizards: he wrought much evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.

  10. Jer. 19:4-5 Because they have forsaken me, and have estranged this place, and have burned incense in it unto other gods, whom neither they nor their fathers have known, nor the kings of Judah, and have filled this place with the blood of innocents;

  11. Jer. 19:4-5 [5] They have built also the high places of Baal, to burn their sons with fire for burnt offerings unto Baal, which I commanded not, nor spake it, neither came it into my mind:

  12. “Gehenna” --- Hell King Josiah stopped this awful practice and the valley became a place that brought up disgusting feelings and emotions

  13. “Gehenna” --- Hell • “…the Valley of Hinnom was used as the garbage dump for the city of Jerusalem. Refuse, waste materials, and dead animals were burned there. Fires continually smoldered, and smoke from the burning debris rose day and night…

  14. “Gehenna” --- Hell • Hinnom thus became a graphic symbol of woe and judgment and of the place of eternal punishment called HELL. Translated into Greek, the Hebrew ‘Valley of Hinnom’ becomes gehenna…” Nelson’s New Illustrated Bible Dictionary

  15. “Gehenna” --- Hell • The word hell in the KJV refers to Hades or the intermediate state and it also refers to the place of eternal punishment. • “Hades” • “Gehenna”

  16. “Gehenna” --- Hell • This word translated hell is used 12 times in the N.T. • JESUS USED THIS WORD 11 TIMES OUT OF THE 12!

  17. “Hell” as used by Jesus

  18. Mt. 5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire

  19. Mt. 5:29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

  20. Mt. 5:30 [30] And if thy right hand offend thee, cut if off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

  21. Mt. 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

  22. Mt. 18:9 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire.

  23. Mt. 23:15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.

  24. Mt. 23:33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?

  25. Mk. 9:43-47 43] And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: [44] Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

  26. Mk. 9:43-47 [45] And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: [46] Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

  27. Mk. 9:43-47 [47] And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire:

  28. Lk. 12:5 But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.

  29. Other Words Jesus Used To describe Eternal Punishment

  30. Mt. 13:40 As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world.

  31. Mt. 13:41-42 The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; [42] And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

  32. Mt. 25:30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

  33. Mt. 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

  34. Mt. 25:46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

  35. Jn. 5:29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

  36. Conclusion • Jesus Christ taught the reality of hell! • Do you want this place to be your eternal home?
