Data Catalogs • Product: EPA's Guide to Selected National Environmental Statistics in the U.S. Government (1993) • Interagency Metadata Format, Link to Actual Data, and Sample Graphic of That Data – Lead to Digital Libraries in Next Section • Purpose: The Five things in Title - Guide, Selected, National, Environmental Statistics, U.S. Government • Technology: Folio Author Once - Publish Multiple Ways (Paper, Diskette, and Web Service) • Still at http://www.sdi.gov and http://web-services.gov • Goal: Become a Bureau for Environmental Statistics (like the Bureau of Labor Statistics) • Got to be a Center for Environmental Statistics. • Got to help start the National Biological Service (Department of Interior) for its first three years. • Recognition: EPA Bronze Medal Note: This presentation uses a standard metadata format like catalogs should!

Digital Libraries • Products: Biological Resources (1994), Sustainable Development Indicators and Industrial Ecology (2001), State of the Environment and Federal Statistics (1994), Indicators (2002), and Community Programs (2002) • Pioneered Electronic Publishing of Large Documents with Data - Lead to Publishing Federal Statistics in Next Section • Purpose: Support the Council on Environmental Quality and the Interagency Working Group on Sustainable Development • Technology: Same Folio – LivePublish Author Once - Publish Multiple Ways • Folio to Next Page to Fast Search and Transfer to Microsoft (Bing). Now Rocket Software NXT4 • Goal: Federated Content Network (like Socrata wants to do for Data.gov!) • Recognition: Exceptional Performance Awards from DoI and USGS

FedStats.gov and FedStats.net • Products: One Stop for Federal Statistics (1997) and Distributed Content Network for Annual Statistical Abstract (1998) • Purpose: As part of the Administration's efforts to achieve improved customer service and greater efficiency throughout the Federal government, FedStats will benefit both Federal agencies and the public in reducing the amount of time and effort necessary to locate data (http://fedstats.gov/osspress.html). • Technology: Open Source Web Page System and NXT4 • Also MapStats: United States - To view a profile of your State, county, city, congressional district, or Federal judicial district, select the name of the State from the menu or use the map of the United States (http://fedstats.gov/qf/ ) • Note: http://fedstats.net now at http://web-services.gov and http://www.sdi.gov • Goal: Official Federal statistics are now much easier and faster to find, thanks to a new World Wide Web site unveiled today by the Clinton Administration (1997); and the Annual Statistics Abstract (about 40 chapters and about 1500 data sets) are available in a distributed content network (looks like it is in one place but is physically distributed across multiple Web servers so the content is maintained by its stewards) (1998). • Recognition: Gore Hammer Award for Reinventing Government

Information Sharing of Trusted Reference Knowledge in a Dynamic Knowledge Repository • Products: CIO Council's XML Web Services Working Group (August 2002-September 2003) and Semantic Interoperability Community of Practice (SICoP) (2004-2008) • Keep the Data (structured and unstructured) and Metadata (ontology) Together in the Knowledgebase in Cloud Computing Tools - Led to Pioneering the Use of Semantic Wikis in Government in Next Section • Purpose: Support Semantic Wiki Pilots, Semantic Technologies & Interoperability, Enterprise Architecture, Data Architecture, and Data Reference Model 2.0 and 3.0 • Technology: Same Folio – LivePublish Author Once - Publish Multiple Ways • Still at http://web-services.gov and http://www.sdi.gov • Goal: Share Trusted Reference Knowledge in a Dynamic Knowledge Repository in Support of Multiple Communities of Practice • Recognition: Federal Quad Council and Federal CIO Council

Semantic Community Sandboxes • Products: Semantic Community Sandboxes 2010 and 2011 • Take the Data (and metadata) Directly to Information Modeling and Mashup Tools Where We Then Can Apply Stronger Semantic Analytics Tools (Semantic Community Knowledge-Centric Systems) and Data Science Products – Led to Request for Data.gov Detail in Next Section • Purpose: New Community Infrastructure Sandboxes, A Gov 2.0 Platform for Open Government with Data Science (Aneesh Chopra Challenge), and Putting Your Desktop in the Cloud in Support of the Open Government Directive (OGD) and a Data.gov/Semantic (VivekKundra Challenge), Getting to the 5 stars of Linked Open Data (Tim Berners-Lee Challenge), RPI/TWC Data Science (Peter Fox) and Semantic eScience (Deborah McGuiness) Class Assignments, and Harvard Leadership for a Networked World Invited Practitioner (Jerry Mechling) • Technology: Deki Wikis (40) to the MindTouch Technical Communication Suite (http://semanticommunity.net and http://semanticommunity.info) • Goal: Pilot Data.gov for the Federal CIO Council's Governance Subcommittee Using the Previous Annual Statistical Abstract Work (April 10, 2009) and Complete All of the OGD Requirements (March 13, 2010) with over 50 Data Science Products for the US EPA and the World Community • Recognition: Data.gov Detail Requested

Data Journalism • Products: Data Science for Data Journalism • Purpose: Launch AOL Government July 12, 2011 • http://semanticommunity.info/AOL_Government • Technology: MindTouch Technical Communication Suite, Silver Spotfire, and Blogsmith • Goal: Become the world’s foremost data journalist  • Recognition: First Data Journalist Hired by AOL Government
