  1. Being transformed ... Feast of Transfiguration 2012

  2. (St. John Chrysostom) God calls us, then waits for us to approach Him with all our free will, to grant us every help.

  3. 1. He was Transfigured • 2 Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John, and led them up on a high mountain apart by themselves; and He was transfigured before them. 3 His clothes became shining, exceedingly white, like snow, such as no launderer on earth can whiten them. 4 And Elijah appeared to them with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. Mk 9:2-4

  4. Μεταμορφόω = Transfigured • Μεταμορφόω = G3339 : 4 times in the New Testament. Matt 17:2, Mk 9:2, Rom 12:2, 2 Cr 3:18. • From μετά (G3326) = With or behind, and μορφόω (G3445)= Form : only once: Gal 4:19 • 19 My dear children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you, (Gal 4:19)

  5. 2. they were greatly afraid • 5 Then Peter answered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; and let us make three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”— 6 because he did not know what to say, for they were greatly afraid. Mk 9:5,6

  6. Father Seraphim Rose • The Prophets therefore were filled with joy, and the Apostles likewise, in their ascent of the mountain. The Prophets rejoiced because they had seen His Humanity, which they had not known. And the Apostles rejoiced because they had seen the glory of His Divinity, which they had not known.

  7. 3. a voice came out of the cloud • 7 And a cloud came and overshadowed them; and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son. Hear Him!” 8 Suddenly, when they had looked around, they saw no one anymore, but only Jesus with themselves. Mk 9:7,8

  8. Eye witnesses for his majesty • For we did not follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty.17 For He received from God the Father honour and glory when such a voice came to Him from the Excellent Glory: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” 18 And we heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain. 2 Pet 1:16-18

  9. 4. Commandment and a Process • And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Rom 12:2 • But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord. 2 cor 3:18

  10. St. Anastasius of Sinai (Nn. 6-10: Melanges d'archeologie et d'histoire 67 [1955], 241-244) • Let us run with confidence and joy to enter into the cloud like Moses and Elijah, or like James and John. Let us be caught up like Peter to behold the divine vision and to be transfigured by that glorious transfiguration. Let us retire from the world, stand aloof from the earth, rise above the body, detach ourselves from creatures and turn to the creator, to whom Peter in ecstasy exclaimed: Lord, it is good for us to be here.
