  4. Myths to promote Canadian Identity A Nation is unified by two things: • Shared memories of a common history. • People’s consent in the present. - Ernest Renan *are myths fabrications and lies? Or is it just creative story telling to enhance the stories of our past?

  5. Institutions • An organization established for and united by a specific purpose.

  6. Cultural Institutions • National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa • Glenbow Museum in Calgary - Display Canadian artwork and try to preserve and promote our many languages and cultures.

  7. The Dominion Institute Founded in 1997 Uses television, news, electronic media and school programs to educate people about Canadian history. The Council of Canadians Founded in 1985 Canada’s largest citizens’ organization. Promote progressive policies on fair trade, clean water, energy security, public health care. Educational Institutions

Institutions that Seek Influence Assembly of First Nations and the Metis National Council Pollsters and Think Tanks - Ipsos Reid, COMPAS, The Strategic Council - Surveys on when government should hold an election, possible tax cuts, opinions on current events. *Mock citizenship exam – poor results.

  9. Economic and Commercial Institutions • The National Anti-Poverty Organization - Founded in 1971 by 250 groups. - One of the first NGOs to address the UN. - Canada received a poor rating. • The Hudson’s Bay Company - Founded in 1670 - Trading, exploration, Hudson Bay Blanket*

Arts and Cultural Programs • CBC – Canadian Broadcasting Corp. • NFB – National Film Board. • CRTC – Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission. *all help to promote Canadian artists, music and movies. • National Galleries and Museums - receive funding from the Federal Government .

  11. Educational Programs • Katimavik – “meeting place” - educate Canadian youth through community involvement • Canada World Youth - International intercultural program *should the government continue to spend public money on programs like these?

  12. Programs that Promote Peace, Order and Good Government • RCMP – Royal Canadian Mounted Police • CCRA – Canadian Customs and Revenue Agency • CSIS – Canadian Security Intelligence Service (our spy agency)

  13. Economic Programs • The Bank of Canada and the Royal Canadian Mint • Advertising and Sponsorship -should public money be spent on flags, pins and sponsoring our Olympic athletes?

  14. Musicians and Artists • Celine Dion • Nickelback • Shania Twain • Group of Seven • Emily Carr
