Canada at War…1939-1945 It is important to know that: • Our role in the Second World War was one of the most important of all Allied countries. • Our role in the War and our effort during the War helped shape our identity • Even though the war was fought overseas, life in Canada was very different for all Canadians on the home front, especially changes for women.

  3. Canada at War …1939-1945 1918 At the end of the First World War, Canada fought with the Allies and were victorious. They fought against Germany and her allies, who started the conflict. World War I was a War of trenches.

  4. Canada at War…1939-1945 The Versailles Treaty Territories lost by Germany At the conclusion of World War I, the winners took from Germany and her Allies territories and they were also obligated to pay large sums of money (Reparations) to help with the rebuilding of the nations they destroyed.

Canada at War…1939-1945 1867-1918 Canada became a Dominion in 1867 with the signing of the BNA The British North America Act From this date until 1918, Canada was a member of the British Empire/Commonwealth … CThis is important because in this Act it stimpulated that any time Britain went to War, Canada also went automatically.

  6. Le Canada en Guerre…1939-1945 The Statute of Westminster 1931 This statute was signed between Canada and England in 1931. It stipulated that Canada, from That point forward was able to make its own Decision whether or not to go to war, Independent of Great Britain.

  7. Canada at War…1939-1945 One person changed world history in the 1930’s. His name was Adolph Hitler. He took power in Germany in 1933 and became a ruthless dictator who was hungry for power, wealth and fame. He created a system of government where all other parties were eliminated.

  8. Canada at War…1939-1945 1936-1939 As dictator of Germany, Hitler was unhappy wit hthe Treaty of Versailles and wanted an end to the land portion of the treaty. Hitler and his Nazi party began to reclaim the lands taken from them in the Treaty that was signed at the end of World War I. The other countries of the world, who did not want to see another world conflict, stayed out of the affairs. They did not oppose Hitler and his Nazis as they claimed the lands as their own. This is known as Appeasement.

  9. Canada at War…1939-1945 When Hitler invaded Poland in 1939, Great Britain and France both declared war against Germany. Canada, however were not obligated to go to War at this time…WHY?

Canada at War…1939-1945 So, our Prime Minister at the time, William – Lyon MacKenzie King offered a compromise to Canadians… …only volunteers needed participate at the outset of the war and Canada would work to supply the Allies in Europe with what they required. The 10th Prime Minister of Canada from 1921 to 1926, from 1926 to 1930, & from 1935 to 1948, totalling more than 21 years.
