  8. What is the function of the gill rakers? Keep food in mouth, out of gills

  9. What is the other name for the gill cover? Operculum

  10. What structure helps fish to regulate buoyancy? Gas bladder (aka swim bladder)

  12. Which blood vessels carry blood to the heart? Veins

  13. What is the function of the white blood cells? Fight disease

  16. Dissection Guidelines • Treat specimen with respect • Clean and return dry tools in boxes • Wet pins on paper towel • Study specimen – be prepared for lab practical next class (scales and fish anatomy)

  17. Procedure • Follow instructions on handout • Omit scale examination and brain observation

  18. Turn In • 3 drawings • After skin is pulled back showing muscle blocks (myomeres) • Gill – brachial arch, gill filaments, gill rakers • Internal anatomy – pyloric ceca, stomach, swim bladder, gonad, intestine, pancreas, liver, heart
