  2. First - we need training • Research • Vocabulary • Compile library of resources • Attend training, training, training • Assess “lay of the land” locally • Learn, learn, learn

  3. Meet our Partners; Become a Partner • Levels of partnerships • Public Health – workgroup • Department • Other county departments • Cities (Planners, public works, transportation) • Stakeholders • County-wide – Solano Transportation Authority; Planning directors meetings • Regional - MTC

  4. Get Involved – Seat at the Table • Identify local projects upon which you can have an impact • Prioritize and select one or two

  5. What do we bring to the table? • Data on health issues; health disparities; • Passion for health issues • Community organization and mobilization skills • Support for innovative engineering solutions, traffic calming, injury prevention • Support from a “new” voice for livable community design

  6. Participate in Planning Process; Review and Comment on Plans • City of Fairfield Area Specific Plan for Train Station • Participate in community process • Review plans • Work with planning and transportation depts • Testify to Planning Commission • Testify to City Council

  7. Let’s talk specifics • TOD around Train Station • What did review find? • Intersection width • Pedestrian crossing on overpass • Sidewalk width in residential areas • Public Plaza • Multi-modal connectivity to other areas in plan • Add Health, HIA to EIR

  8. Participate in Planning (cont) • Solano County General Plan • What about our own buildings? • Work with Resource Management, Architect’s office to provide input on our own building design • Formalize relationship with Resource Mgmt. for routing of plans to/through PH once submitted to them (HIA’s, EIR’s) • SR2S Steering Committee member for STA

  9. Serve as a Convenor • Partnership with Board of Supervisors • Assist on their goals ie. childhood obesity • Participate in planning and summits; add components (ie. walk audits) • Convene a work group to plan a Solano Built Environment Symposium

  10. So many roles, so little time! • The challenge is not to find a PH role in regards to land use and built environment, but to choose wisely among the many roles and projects to identify those areas in which PH input will make a significant difference.
