  10. Stereotypes Pity. Dependent. Tragic / Heroic.

  14. New Vision May or may not involve previous vision.

  15. You WillDo It In YourOwn Time There is no pre-defined pace.

  17. Coping Styles We are built to handle trauma.

  18. Coping Styles Purpose No matter how unpleasant, yourcoping style is protecting you.

  19. Coping Styles Anger Hard Work Depression Sadness Denial Confusion Suicidality Resistance Humor Hopelessness

  20. A Spectrum You move along it.

  21. Coping Styles The Dark Side Widely assumed to be mandatory. A reasonable response.

  22. Coping Styles The Bright Side Denial wards off emotion. Fake it ‘til you make it.

  23. Coping Styles Letting Go They are for the initial stage only. They can cause serious problems.

  24. Grieving Doesn’t overrun Healthy Allow others to Not in our culture

  25. Spiritual Belief ...should support and empower you.

  26. Stage of Life Not necessarily better or worse.

  27. Somethingto Gain Adapting to disability deepens you.

  28. Normalize At first, your pre-disability self prevails.

  29. Integration Your disability becomes a part of you.

  30. Showing Up Your disability disappears.

  31. Relationships They might change, they might end. There will be new ones.

  32. Adjustmentis a SharedProcess Friends. Family. Partners. They need to grieve, too.

  33. SharedProcess Family Finding the boundary. Parents resume protective role. Who’s in control? Collaboration / Communication

  34. SharedProcess Spouse/Partner Shifts the relationship dynamic. Can interfere with intimacy. Committed partners work it out.

  35. SharedProcess Friends You find out who’s really your friend. May exaggerate their fear of impact. May just not know what to do.

  36. Who Is InControl? Communication. Respect.
