  3. Welcome! • Introductions: • Take a minute and find out the following things about the person sitting next to you … • Name and school where they work? • What excites them about 2011/2012?

Question and Answer • A ‘strategy’ often used to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to ask a question or make a comment … • Everyone writes something… • On the piece of paper (provided at table), please ask any question(s) or comment(s) you are thinking about… • Our SS team will do our best to answer all questions…if you stump us, then we will find out the answer (we know a lot of very smart people) and share this with you at a later time today…

  12. CESD’s Pilot Project 3 schools • Penhold • EcolleSteffieWoima • Hugh Sutherland • At a minimum, teachers will complete a learner profile for all Grade 1 to 9 students who are: • working below grade level • in need of additional support, and/or • are identified with special education needs.

  13. What is the goal of the pilot? Build teacher capacity to better meet the diverse learning needs of all students

  14. What is the Inclusive Education Planning Tool (IEPT)? • A digital resource • Focus on building teacher capacity and enhancing teacher practice • Offers new ways to: • collect • organize, and • think about information to enhance day-to-day instructional planning

  15. Instructional Supports • a collection of teaching strategies and routines, and learning resource materials that create successful learning experiences for an individual student or a group of students • Language Arts • Medical Conditions/ Disabilities • Social Participation

  16. Shifting Practice How will using the Inclusive Education Planning Tool be different from using an IPP? IPP IEPT Moving from looking at disabilities to looking at learner needs as well as abilities.

  17. Shifting Practice • Focuses on changing teacher practice and changing the learning environment • Begins with classroom assessment • Begins with the Program of Studies • Can be used to support all learners • Embeds individualized planning within classroom planning for all students

  18. Shifting Practice • Requires collaborating with parents to identify and ensure mutual understanding of student strengths and needs • Planning tool informs progress report • Dynamic teacher planning tool with report-generating capacity

  21. Provincial Protocol Framework (PPF) Success in School:

  22. “Every time a youth in care moves to a new placement and new school, they fall approximately six months behind academically.” (National Youth in Care Network, 2008)

  23. Provincial data findings Significantly more children and youth in care: • Drop out of school Do poorly on provincial achievement tests • Fall farther behind in school as they get older, and • Are less likely to graduate from high school, compared to students in the general population (Only 17% graduate)

The RESPONSE The Provincial Protocol Framework (PPF)- Success in School for Children and Youth in Care • A collaborative initiative between Alberta Education and Children and Youth Services (CYS) to support children and youth in care that: • Creates a learning team that wraps around the student • Creates a holistic, strength based Success in School plan • Assists the student to become a self-advocate

  25. INITIATIVE Goals • To improve collaborative practice resulting in children and youth in care feeling welcomed and being supported at school • To allow and support the child/youth’s voice to be heard • To improve transition plans that will move with the student in care to develop consistency

  26. INITIATIVE GOALS • To reduce drop out rates of children and youth in care • To improve achievement test results • To improve high school completion • To increase in communication and sharing of essential information between CFSA, DFNA’s and educational facilities

Core Learning team Core team members include: • The student • Caseworkers, • Caregivers • A school point person • The classroom teacher(s), and • Any other individual that contributes to the student’s success Together, the members of the team help promote success in school by reinforcing the importance of an education, positive peer groups, and connection to supportive adults in the lives of young people in care.

School Point Person Some Role and Responsibilities: • Identifies student(s) in care • Establishes a relationship with student • Establishes a relationship with caregiver and caseworker • Helps coordinate and develop Success in School Plan • Worked with teachers to address academic needs on an individual basis

Plan • Have a Success in School plan for each student in care by the 2013-14 school year This year’s implementation plan will focus on: • A continuation of the students who had SIS plans last year • Students in care who have an IPP • Students in care who have VTRA (Violent Threat Risk Assessment) • Students in our residential programs

Goals for “Action on Inclusion” • In June we submitted an application to AB ED in an effort to be approved for some additional funding to support the implementation of ‘Action on Inclusion’ • CESD was granted $185 000 to support moving in this direction – through a “Building Instructional and Leadership Capacity Project”…yeh! • It is important that this work aligns with our Mission/Vision and focus on building Quality Learning Environments in each classroom. • We developed five goals to help guide / support our work…we would like to know what you think…

Goals for “Action on Inclusion” • ACTIVITY: • Please read the document that highlights the FIVE goals for ‘Action on Inclusion’ • On the sheet provided, please write down your “thoughts – questions – suggestions” – space is provided underneath each goal. • After you have taken the time to do this on your own, please spend some time sharing your thoughts with the ‘Liaisons’ at your table group • Hand in your ‘feedback’ sheet to our SS team when you are finished.

Planning for the Future • Some/most of you have been in your “Special Education Liaison” role for a short time and some of you for a longer time… • As I continue to LEARN about ‘CESD’… I’d like to provide you with an opportunity to share your thoughts/insights for consideration. Your feedback is critical when we consider taking next steps and thinking about future planning. • TASK: As you reflect about providing educational support, guidance, and leadership to your students, education staff, and families in the role of “Special Education Liaison” in your school community, please respond to the following five questions (on the sheet of paper provided).
