To gain a pass you must: P1 identify a range of musical ensembles P2 identify the different roles within musical ensembles P3 become an active member of a musical ensemble, contributing to decision-making and demonstrating an ability to communicate effectively with others P4 become involved in the devising stages of a project identifying a plan for the successful realisation of a performance P5 perform as part of an ensemble, demonstrating an awareness of musical communication.

  3. To gain a merit you must: M1 describe a range of musical ensembles M2 describe the different roles within musical ensembles M3 become an active member of a musical ensemble, contributing to decision-making and having considerable input in the project. Demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively and to show initiative M4 become involved in the devising stages of a project, demonstrating creative input and describing a detailed plan for the successful realisation of a performance M5 perform confidently as part of an ensemble, demonstrating an ability to communicate musically with other musicians.

  4. To gain a distinction you must: D1 explain a range of musical ensembles D2 explain the different roles within a musical ensemble D3 become an active member of a musical ensemble, contributing to decision-making and having considerable creative input in the project, communicating with members of the ensemble effectively, authoritatively and showing initiative D4 become involved in the devising stages of a project, demonstrating creative input and justifying a plan for the successful realisation of a performance, paying close attention to both practical and musical considerations D5 perform confidently as part of an ensemble, demonstrating an ability to communicate musically with both other musicians and an audience.

  5. Assignment: E23.1 Ensemble Research Produce a simple booklet entitled ‘Musical Ensembles’ • Choose five different musical ensemble from the following: orchestra, brass band, wind band, chamber ensembles, rock/pop/jazz groups, folk bands, vocal groups (choirs, barbershop, chamber) For each ensemble explain the following • The instruments / Voices in the ensemble • The type of music they play (with examples) • An example of an actual ensemble in that area • An example and description of music for that ensemble • An account of how the group prepares for a performance. You might want to consider the following roles: performer, conductor, director & manager

Assignment: E23.2 Preparing for a Performance Form a musical ensemble for a specific performance and plan the following: • Who plays what • When, where and what for the performance and your audience • The music you want to play and why • Organise suitable musical arrangements • A suitable timeline for rehearsals You should consider taking minutes of your group meeting Rehearse as an ensemble for your performance: Keep a detailed rehearsal diary.

  7. Assignment: E23.3 Ensemble Performance Exam Realise your plans by performing to an audience as an ensemble

  8. Learning Outcomes Understand different musical ensembles and the roles within them Know how to devise, plan and prepare for a performance as part of an ensemble Be able to present an ensemble performance.
