7. The New DWF 6 Design Web Format
For published design data
Simple, Secure, Smart, Small, Scalable, and Open
Compressed, fast download
Foundation medium for collaboration
Easy distribution of drawing sets DWF stands for Design Web Format™, an open and secure file format that was developed by Autodesk to enable designers, engineers, developers, and their colleagues to communicate rich design information to anyone who needs to view, review, or print that design information. DWF files are highly compressed, so they are smaller and faster to transmit than design files, without the overhead associated with typical CAD drawings.
The latest release of DWF is DWF 6. DWF 6 enables authors to build a complete set of design drawings, or layouts, into one DWF file. This allows engineering professionals to publish the equivalent of a drawing set as a single DWF file for easy distribution and communication to the extended review team.DWF stands for Design Web Format™, an open and secure file format that was developed by Autodesk to enable designers, engineers, developers, and their colleagues to communicate rich design information to anyone who needs to view, review, or print that design information. 8. DWF versus DWG DWF is not a replacement for DWG
DWF is faster, easier and more secure…and therefore the optimal format for communicating design information to those who need it DWF allows you to share your design information without allowing others to change it. However, DWF files are not a replacement for native CAD formats such as DWG—designers still need the original files for editing or updating design data.
Use DWF when…. You want to communicate design information in a highly compressed and secure format for review outside of the design team.
And use DWG when… exchanging design data among design professionals who need direct access to the original design data.DWF allows you to share your design information without allowing others to change it. 9. DWF versus PDF Unlike PDF, DWF is best suited for digital design data because it intelligently stores information specific to technical drawing sets and design objects.
DWF is richer, easier to publish, small, fast and secure Compared to PDF, DWF is ideal for communicating design data from AutoCAD, AutoCAD based products and Inventor, whereas PDF is best-suited for publishing data from office applications such as Word, Excel and Powerpoint.
DWF is an open standard developed by Autodesk specifically for communicating rich design data. It is ideal for communicating design data that includes intelligence about: the drawing set being published, individual sheets or pages in the drawing set, objects in the drawing (such as a door or staircase), and properties of those objects (such as endpoints or measurements of an object).
You can easily publish DWF 6 files using the built-in features available in all Autodesk design products, including AutoCAD 2004 products and Inventor. DWF drawings are high fidelity and display as the designer intended, with all the plot styles and settings as specified in AutoCAD. DWF files are small, secure and fast for easy viewing, dynamic panning and zooming, and printing by non-CAD users.

11. Case Study: Mecklenburg County / City of Charlotte The Objective
“Improve overall coordination between review agencies and developers to streamline the entire process, making it better, faster, and more environmentally friendly for everyone involved.”
As an example of how customers are using Autodesk viewers and DWF to improve work processes, Mecklenburg County and the City of Charlotte are leading the way technologically and environmentally by implementing a digital plan submittal process for new subdivision housing.
The goals they set out to achieve were to improve the plan review process by:
- reducing the costs of the paper-intensive process (including printing and storage costs),
- speed the plan review cycle (by allowing 24x7 access to documents in Autodesk Buzzsaw), and
- improve coordination between review agencies and developersAs an example of how customers are using Autodesk viewers and DWF to improve work processes, Mecklenburg County and the City of Charlotte are leading the way technologically and environmentally by implementing a digital plan submittal process for new subdivision housing.

12. The Result
“Greater consistency in redline comments, cutting travel time and reducing miscommunications. Ultimately, digital submittals should cut the review cycle time.”
- Patrick Noonan of PJN Consulting, regarding the City of Charlotte/Mecklenburg County project
“We expect to see an enormous reduction in the amount of paper being used in the process…That’s not only good for the environment, but it will save taxpayers and developers money as well.”
- Kurt Olmstead, Mecklenburg County Case Study: Mecklenburg County / City of Charlotte To implement their digital plan submittal and review process, Mecklenburg County & the City of Charlotte used Autodesk Buzzsaw to collaborate and share documents securely, Volo View for digital review (to redline and markup drawings), and DWF as the publish format for distributing plan submittals.
What they achieved is a more efficient digital plan submittal process that results in reduced paper costs, improved communication, and ultimately shortened review cycles. Their estimate is that if all submittals are done using the Autodesk solution, a reduction in paper usage of 63% overall and as much as 88% for record maps is achieved. To implement their digital plan submittal and review process, Mecklenburg County & the City of Charlotte used Autodesk Buzzsaw to collaborate and share documents securely, Volo View for digital review (to redline and markup drawings), and DWF as the publish format for distributing plan submittals.

15. Easy Markup & Measure Volo View 3 provides a rich set of intuitive markup and precise measurement tools that speed the design review process.
You can then exchange them quickly and easily with other members of your design team, eliminating the cost and time delays of physically mailing paper drawings between project team members. Digital markups are saved as an overlay, in DWF format (or as separate RML files), leaving the original design data unchanged.
Markups and measurements are easy in Volo View with the help of
• Easy to use ActiveShapes® markup objects (comments, clouds, callouts; lines, rectangles, arcs, circles)
ClearScale™ technology that makes it easy to view and distinguish markups onscreen.
AutoSnap™ behavior, so you can accurately snap to objects in a drawing
