How to Plan Objectives for ELs • Consider the students English Proficiency Level (1-6) • Review the WIDA Can-Do Descriptors for each language domain • Consider how the student will demonstrate understanding • How will the student be given information to which he will respond? • Listening? Reading? • How will the student be expected to respond? • Speaking? Writing? • Do the tasks and objectives meet the linguistic needs of the student? • Is the input comprehensible? • Is the expected output possible at the student´s proficiency level? • What support can be provided to ensure the student can be successful?

How to Write Objectivesfor ELs • MPI (Model Performance Indicator) = Objectives • 3 Parts • Language Function + Content Objective + Support • Examples • Labelthe parts of a plant using graphic support and previewed vocabulary. • Write a sentence describing each step in the life cycle of a plant, using picture cards. *Blooms Taxonomy is a great tool. However, please remember that students at lower levels of English Proficiency can complete high level cognitive tasks with the appropriate support.
