The Pediatric Trauma Program • Unintentional injury remains the #1 killer of children age 14 and under in the U.S. • Unintentional injury kills more children than all other childhood diseases combined • Each year in the U.S., 9,000 families lose a child because of a preventable injury • 90% of these injuries could be prevented!

  7. Injuries Are No Accident Injuries are not inevitable; they are preventable.

Child Injuries Still Leading Cause of Death for Children • "Every 4 seconds, a child is treated for an injury in the emergency department, and every hour, a child dies as a result of an injury." • Most common hazards to children: car crashes, suffocation, drowning, poisoning, fires, and falls • CDC’s National Action Plan: http://www.cdc.gov/safechild/nap/ overviews/index.html

  9. PTP is More Than Just Fundraising! • Sponsor a bicycle rodeo, child safety fair or child safety seat inspection event • Purchase and distribute bicycle helmets, child safety seats, electric outlet covers, choke tubes, etc. • Sponsor an “April Pool Day” event • Educate parents about common dangers found around the home • Distribute dolls to children’s hospitals or provide teddy bears to first responders to comfort children • What else???
