  2. “You must be prepared to include a list of references after you have completed the interview process. However, how do you ask and how do you prepare them? Here's what interview guiders and resume writers believe you need to know about selecting references and boosting your chances of landing the job.”

  3. Start thinking of references right off the bat • It's important to build a shortlist of references in your head no matter where you are in the job-hunting process, whether you're only starting out or handling several interviews. Although you might not be able to have the same references for any prospective employer, there are certainly a few key people who will provide you with excellent references. Request permission from each reference now, and you'll be ready to submit them when the time comes.

  4. Be strategic about the references you give • Consider what skills and abilities are most important to them when you're asked to apply references to a specific hiring manager. Then have the most pertinent references. If strategizing is an integral aspect of your career, for example, your new or former supervisor is the best resource. If coordination and collaboration are necessary, choose a peer or colleague.

  5. Prepare your references ahead of time • Be sure you check in with each guide before giving a recruiting manager their names and contact addresses. Send them a copy of the work description and then have a short chat with them about why you think you'd be a good candidate for the role. Remind them about any previous successes or ventures you've collaborated on together that you'd like to talk about.

  6. Know how to deal with the negative • Be sure you frame the issue properly if a recruiting officer wishes to talk with a previous employer with whom you had a strained relationship. Inform the recruiting manager that you are expected to get an unfavourable rating and explain why. Often, make sure you have some references within the same company that will have a more realistic assessment of your results.
