  1. English 9, Day 37 * Thurs/Fri 61) Dialect and Slang VAULT your cell phone! Get this ½ sheet paper, tape in & complete (B classes have this already!) Do BR (tape in), then . . . Review spellings of words!!! Get ready for vocab quiz (NOTE: now is not the time for people of honor and integrity to work on vocab activities, which should already be done) Notebooks will be turned in at END of class.

  2. Vocabulary 9 = quiz today!!! • Close all books, notebooks, etc. & tuck them away. • Cover sheet / doodle sheet • Remember you are a person of integrity & honor!!! • When you are done . . . Turn in quiz to the “turn in” box . . . Place cover sheet on table in front of roomAnd . . . then . . .do “dialect & slang” in notebook then . . .read (tkam or self-selected)

YES – your “plagiarism” warning % will be high. MOST of your submission is QUOTING from text. If you did not use this form, you did it WRONG.

  13. Q1 Writing Prompt = Write a Non-Fiction Narrative Revise/Edit On the back of your paper: PROVE that you have engaged in the Revision/editing process. For each box, include examples, highlight & color code, etc. SOMEHOW show evidence that you have thought through the step.

  14. Resubmitting Narrative Stories 1 3 2 • If you plan to resubmit, you will fix your story and SUBMIT ENTIRE HARD COPY PACKET for regrading. • New packet will include (in this order) 1. New white “request to resubmit” sheet 2. New lavender cover sheet (filled in, again) 3. New (green) evidence of revision sheet 4. Revised/edited / newcolors on “new” final copy5. Old packet

  22. Q2 Writing Sample = Essay The intro starts “broad” with a HOOK . . . It ends NARROW and FOCUSED with your thesis statement.

  23. Q2 Writing Sample = Essay Intro • Hook / Attention-Getting Device • Transition sentence mentioning title & author • Thesis • 3-5 sentences, ~ 50 words • BUUUUUUTTTTTTTTT . . . . .

Q2 Writing Sample = Essay Mr. Borman’s Awesome Intro Obviously . . . • Longer than previous example • Better than previous example Attention-Getting Device = tell a story, include a part of a poem, make a startling statement, etc. Link = connect your AGD to the overall topic. What is the purpose of your story / poem / statement / etc.? Include title & author here. Thesis = State your argument or purpose CLEARLY and DECLARATIVELY in one sentence. This is the one sentence that tells the reader what your essay will cover. Statement of Significance = Why should your audience listen? Provide a warrant (facts / statistics) that proves this topic is important to all listeners. Road Map = Tell your audience where you will take them in your essay. How will it be organized (i.e., chronologically, topically, geographically, problem/cause/solution, etc.)?

  25. Write your introduction. . .make your first impression. . .move from general to specific. . .invite the reader to “stay for more”. . . introduce your source (title in italics) and author.

Re-State Thesis = What was the primary claim of your essay (what does it prove, what is its purpose)? AGD Callback / Mic Drop = Go back to your attention getting device, but look at it taking into account what we learned over the course of your essay. Does this make us interpret the story / info differently or better? Then, give the bigger picture: with this new info, how does the world / reader change? Leave us with hopeful or thought-provoking words of personal importance.

Online Forms: 6 are now posted, all the review you need for Q2 post test
