  1. Guidelines For Affection Friendship & Peer Relationships

  2. Goal • Belvedere Students will maintain an appropriate, respectful level of affection while on campus. • It is the social responsibility of educators to teach students private vs. public guidelines for affection

  3. Policy • While on campus students may show affection in the following ways: • Verbal compliments

  4. Inappropriate displays of affection include: • Any type of kissing • Any prolonged body-to-body contact • Any unwanted physical contact or attention

  5. LAUSD Policy • “The Los Angeles Unified School District is committed to maintaining a working and learning environment that is free from sexual harassment. Sexual harassment of or by employees, students, or persons doing business with the District, is a form of sex discrimination in that it constitutes differential treatment on the basis of sex, sexual orientation (actual or perceived) or gender (actual or perceived). As such, any act of sexual harassment is a violation of state and federal laws and a violation of District policy.” LAUSD Policy Number BUL-3349.0: 11/29/06

  6. Student Responsibilities • 1. Students are expected to act respectfully towards everyone, and should consider how others may perceive or be affected by their actions and words. • 2. Students have the responsibility to report situations/incidents of sexual harassment and/or sex discrimination to an appropriate staff member.

  7. Discussion • What is the difference between Appropriate and Inappropriate displays of affection?

  8. Further Discussion • Discuss School’s social responsibility to teach & model Private vs. Public behaviors including displays of affection.

  9. Additional activities could include: • Have students T-chart Private vs. Public behaviors.

  10. Quick Quiz • What kind of kissing is appropriate on campus? • Can some displays of affection be taken as sexual harassment? • What are two examples of appropriate displays of affection? • To whom may a student report an incident of sexual harassment? • How might this policy have a positive affect on the NMS environment?
