  1. ICP 2/8/12 Mechanical Advantage Rube Goldberg

  2. Warmup video • Bill Nye video “Mechanical Advantage”

  3. Warmup • On the brief video, there will be two demonstrations. Questions will follow.

  4. Warmup • What two simple machines were involved in these demonstrations? • List a different example for each of these simple machines.

  5. Mechanical Advantage Mechanical Advantage = Input distance Output distance Mechanical Advantage = Output force Input force

  6. Mechanical Advantage Input distance Mechanical Advantage = Output distance Pulley: You pull the rope (input) more distance than the bricks actually go up (output). What happens to the mechanical advantage when the top number increases? Mechanical advantage increases: making it easier to pull.

  7. Mechanical Advantage Output force Mechanical Advantage = Input force Pulley: You pull on the rope (input) causing a stronger force to pull up the bricks (output). What happens to the mechanical advantage when the top number increases? Mechanical advantage increases: Mechanical advantage > 1

  8. Types of Mechanical advantage • Mechanical advantage > 1 • Multiplies the input force. • Useful for moving something heavy. • Mechanical advantage < 1 • Uses more force • Useful for moving something a great distance or with great speed. Examples: Pulley Lever Examples: Catapult Airzooka

  9. Types of Mechanical Advantage • MA > 1 Move something heavy with ease. • MA = 1 No advantage • MA < 1 Move something far or fast.

  10. Rube Goldberg Assignment Chart MA > 1 MA = 1 MA < 1
