NYS Virtual Learning Space Phase I and Beyond
Goals of NYSVLS Through the New York State Virtual Learning Space,NYSED-defined learning standards, teacher resources and other curricular and instructional material will be available to administrators, teachers, teacher candidates, parents, students and the public: • Learning standards in each of the seven standards areas • Performance indicators for each standard area at all levels of education • State resource guides with core curricula, where available • State assessments • Learning experiences tied to the performance indicators • Instructional and curricular resources developed by districts and BOCES • Library, archive and museum resources • Technical assistance on the use of NYSVLS
Phase I Goals(To be completed by June 2003) • Define a common format for existing SED content in the 7 standard areas • Learning standards • State resource guides with core curricula, where available • State assessments • Learning experiences • Develop a common interface to existing SED content, with a feedback mechanism • Define and identify application development standards for others to contribute to and consume SED content for later phases • Provide links to existing partner sites that provide educational content • Technical assistance for teachers on the use of VLS • Deployment of a portal, content management solution and web services
Phase II Goals(RFP to be issued spring 2003) • Standards, standards, standards… Build on technical standards agreed on in Phase I & define application requirements • Develop policies and tools for user authentication - early step toward user personalization of VLS • Design and implement quality assurance /endorsement process for content - to ensure consistency with NYS learning standards and assessments • Establish a “Call for Content” - to meet the needs of teachers based on SED analysis and teacher input, in critical academic areas • Expand technical assistance beyond teachers and administrators
Phase III Goals(RFP to be issued spring 2004) • Build on technical standards agreed on in Phase I & II; present user with a common interface for portal applications • Build on lessons learned from Phase II authentication work; expand pilot applications statewide • Reassess how VLS will be hosted • Refine feedback mechanism to remain responsive to needs of our users
