  10. Rooms & Spaces • Numerous doors to classrooms less than 36 inches wide • Improve access by eliminating obstructions

  11. Seats, Tables & Counters • Stadium seating only allows front row use for wheelchair users • Every room should have an adjustable table for a wheelchair or any PWD

  12. Stairs • Restroom between 1st & 2nd floors • Improve “non-slip” stairs • Add mid-railing • Create better support at end

  13. Elevator • Install verbal or audible signals • Lower call buttons or provide reach sticks • Install raised lettering & brail next to buttons

  14. Elevator • Install tactile signs to identify floor numbers • Modify communication • Make door stay open longer

  15. Getting to Restrooms • Inadequate directions • One set located between stair levels • Create more accessible restrooms

  16. Restrooms: Doorways & Passages • Relocate garbage cans • Improve accessibility of handles

  17. Restrooms: Stalls • Difficulty closing doors • Difficulty entering • Widen loop of door handle • Toilet seat too low

  18. Drinking Fountains • Slightly higher then required by ADA • Add buttons to side and front • Protrudes more then 4” • Install cane-detectable barrier

  19. Telephones • Way too high! • Protrudes more then 4” • Install cane-detectable barrier • Not hearing-aid compatible • Only two telephones

  20. Signage • Brail • Accurate directions to toilets & telephones • Not standardized direction • Inadequate directions to accessible ramp when entering building • Better visibility of map

  21. Overall Assessment • The building failed to meet many regulations • Architecture students should be educated in a building which is a prime example of ADA regulations! • Renovation Spring 2006
