  1. InternationalCongress of Mathematicians Rio de Janeiro 2014

  2. Why in Brazil? • In the last half century or so, Brazilian and Latin American Mathematics has been developing rapidly and acquiring increasing international recognition. Latin American contribution to World mathematical production (%)

  3. Why in Brazil? • Brazil joined the IMU in 1954 (in Group I) and was promoted to Group IV in 2005. • National mathematical community up from some fifty people in the 1950’s to around one thousand active researchers today. • A new wave of growth of Mathematics must now take place, to meet the needs of a country of continental proportions.

  4. Why in Brazil? • The current political and economic situation is particularly favorable, as Brazilian economy becomes increasingly solid. • Brazilian authorities are strongly supportive of the initiative to bring the ICM2014 to Brazil. I want to express the full support of the Brazilian government to the initiative to host the International Congress of Mathematicians 2014 in Rio de Janeiro […] I assure you of full backing from the Brazilian authorities. Sérgio M. Rezende, Minister of Science and Technology • Rio de Janeiro offers excellent conditions for the realization of major international events.

  5. Brazil and Latin America • Strong mathematical interaction between Brazil and other countries in the region, in particular through UMALCA - Mathematical Union for Latin America and the Caribbean. • Funding for scientific collaboration in the region, including research networks, exchange of researchers, joint meetings, through the PROSUL program of the Brazilian government. • Overwhelming support to the ICM Rio de Janeiro 2014 from colleagues and institutions across Latin America.

  6. Brazil and Latin America Active collaboration between mathematicians of the Latin American area and Brazilian scientists and institutions is an important ingredient in the steady development of mathematics in several of the countries in the region. José Antonio de la Peña, President of UMALCA Brazil, moreover, has been a center that catalyses relations between other countries in Latin America. Many Mexican-Uruguayan and Mexican-Peruvian relations cannot be understood without the central role of Brazil. Oscar Sánchez, Director of CIMAT, Mexico • The ICM has been held 19 times in Europe, 4 times in North America, and 3 times in Asia. Latin America has 10 member countries of the IMU and never hosted an ICM.

  7. The Wonderful City • Mild climate: avg. precipitation 50mm (August) avg. min. 17oC - avg. max. 23oC • Hospitable people. • Rich cultural and musical scene. • Breathtaking sceneries. Beaches. Largest urban forest in the world.

  8. Easy Access • Direct flights to/from major cities worldwide. • Consistent national commitment to the free circulation of scientists from all countries. • No visas required from citizens of many countries, including most Europeans and South Americans (strict reciprocity policy).

  9. Modern Infrastructure • Convention centers SulAmérica Convention Center Hotel Windsor Barra

  10. Modern Infrastructure • Accommodation: about 23,000 hotel rooms, in all price ranges. • FIFA World Cup 2014 to further boost existing infrastructure. Riocentro Convention and Exhibition Center

  11. Rio, Capital of Science All this makes of Rio de Janeiro a privileged site for international scientific events: • Latin American Congress of Mathematicians, 2000, about 1,000 participants • XXIV Brazilian Mathematical Colloquium 2003, about 1,150 participants • III Conference on HIV Pathogenesis and Treatment, 2005, about 6,000 participants • XXV Brazilian Mathematical Colloquium, 2005, about 1,250 participants • International Congress of Mathematical Physics 2006, about 700 participants • XI International Congress of World Federation of Public Health 2006, about 10,000 participants • IV International Congress of Arthroplastic Surgery 2006, about 1,500 participants • XIV Scientific International Congress of Esthetic Surgery 2006, about 4,000 participants • XIV Retina International World Conference 2006, about 4,000 participants • XVI International Congress of the Interamerican Association of Industrial Property 2006, about 1,000 participants • 1st International Congress of Sustainable Energy of Kyoto Treaty 2006, about 2,000 participants • World Congress of Nephrology, 2007, about 6,000 participants. • Pan American Congress on Sport Medicine 2007, about 500 participants • XXVI Brazilian Mathematical Colloquium 2007, about 1,232 participants • XIII Congress of the International Liver Transplantation Society 2007, about 900 participants • XIII International Congress on Immunology, 2007, about 6,000 participants • XIII International Congress of Endocrinology, 2008, about 6,000 participants • International Conference on the Physics of Semiconductors, 2008, about 1,000 participants. About ten international mathematical meetings held in Rio every year. 2007 Pan American Games took place in Rio de Janeiro. 2014 FIFA World Cup Finals matches scheduled for the Maracanã stadium .
