CULTPLAN Handout / questionnaire
Handout / Objectives Presentation: • First version, to be discussed. Input is theoretical, and not related yet to test case, differences between strands, etc. Handout aims to: • Provide guidance in approach cases • Have – to some extent – a common/similar approach concerning case studies
Handout / advice on questionnaires • First step: working paper on questionnaires. • Conclusions for CULTPLAN: • Use of a less structured questionnaire, which will be adjusted and more detailed after each interview in a case; • Start with easy questions, and more difficult/awkward questions should be asked in a latter phase of the interview; • Face to face interviews will be done (because of detailed questions and answers) • Usage of open questions (because of the very individual answers) • Guaranty anonymity • Integrate an open ending question: “is there anything else you want to mention?”
Handout / approach data collection • Inventory phase: Analyze website and other available documents in order to get • acquainted with project; • an idea which partners are most interesting to interview at first sight; • an idea what can be important cross cultural items/events in this case • ‘Deepening’ phase: interviews
Handout / approach interviews • At least 5 interview per case / if possible at least 3 partners • At least 2 interviews with lead partner • At least 2 interviews with other partners • 5th interview own valuation (maybe somebody outside the project) • Based on inventory phase, CULTPLAN-partners develop questionnaire for first interview case • Results first interview(s) should be used to sharpen questions in questionnaire • First interview will be more general, next interviews should focus more (maybe on certain items)
Handout / approach interviews • Interviews should, if possible, be executed in native language • Reports per interview should be detailed and in English • Data collection will be done by 1 partner (or NOT???) • Possibly a (somewhat) differentiated approach per strand will be developed • Related to result discussion wp differences per strand and discussion paper concerning case selection • Before the interviews, ask for additional info, for example minutes of each meeting
Handout / approach interviews • The questionnaire for the case study can be designed based on two sorts of questions: • More general questions around culture and cultural differences (to be proposed to every respondent) • How does one notice cultural differences? • How did cultural differences manifest themselves in your project? • How were the cultural differences dealt with (for example by LP)? • Questions around cross cultural items (this is meant to speak about culture and how it manifests in more detail) • Ask about first impressions (on psu), why he had these impression, what where determinants in this first impression? • Focus on explanation of respondent about what he mentioned as a cultural difference (e.g. why a certain partner acted in a certain way). What was the reason, according to the respondent (e.g. political history, religious orientation, working habits, …)

Handout / questions • Do we only want to carry out the analysis cross cultural (2 CULTPLAN-partners), or also data collection? • To what extent is it necessary to standardize the questionnaires in the case studies? • What are ideas to bring this handout from a theoretical approach to more operational questions?
