  1. Response to Stimuli Mrs. Jackson 7th grade Science

  2. Vocabulary: • Stimulus • Response • Homeostasis • Behavior • Tropism • Gravitropism • Phototropism • Thigmotropism • Photoperiodism

  3. Stimulus vs. Response • A stimulus is any action or event htat causes and organism to react • A response is the organisms reaction to a stimulus • Example: Stimulus: Your stomach rumbles because it is hungry. Response: You eat!

  4. Animal Responses to Stimuli: • Behavior is something that an organism does in response to a stimuli. • Two types of animal behavior: • Learned behavior: behaviors that animals develops through practice and experience • Example: chimps using a tree branch to hunt and “fish” for termites in a log • Innate behavior: behaviors that animals are born with • Example: birds building nests

  5. Plant Responses to Stimuli: Tropisms • Gravitropism: a plant’s response to the downward pull of gravity • Phototropism: a plant’s response to light • Thigmotropism: a plant’s response to touch • Some plant responses are not tropisms because they do not involve growth • Photoperiodism: a response to changes in the length of daylight
