Most people know that if you add an ice cube to a drink, the drink will get colder. Integer Addition and Subtraction Hot Cubes and Cold Cubes
Imagine that there is an invention that will do the same thing, but with a catch… If you add a “Cold” cube to a drink, it will cool the temperature exactly one degree. If you take a “Cold” cube out of the same drink, the drink will get one degree warmer. Integer Addition and Subtraction Hot Cubes and Cold Cubes
This imaginary invention also comes with a companion invention, called a “Hot” cube. If you add a “Hot” cube to a drink, it will warm the temperature exactly one degree. If you take a “Hot” cube out of the same drink, the drink will get one degree colder. Integer Addition and Subtraction Hot Cubes and Cold Cubes
So…if your soup is 5 degrees too cold Integer Addition and Subtraction And you add 8 hot cubes… It becomes 3 degrees too hot. Hot Cubes and Cold Cubes -5 + 8 = +3
Or, if your drink is 10 degrees too cold, you can remove 8 cold cubes and it will warm up 8 degrees to negative 2. Integer Addition and Subtraction -10 - -8 = -2 Hot Cubes and Cold Cubes
Or, if your drink is 2 degrees too cold, you can remove 8 cold cubes and it will warm up 8 degrees to become 6 degrees too warm. Integer Addition and Subtraction -2 -1 0 +1 +2 +3 +4 +5 +6 Hot Cubes and Cold Cubes -2 - -8 = +6
