  1. LACCD’s Sustainability Project The Los Angeles Community Colleges have embarked on an extensive building program to address campus improvements and transform its nine community colleges into state-of-the-art educational resources for students and the community. Going Green

  2. LACCD’s First LEED Building The Los Angeles Southwest College Child Development Center and Education Complex was the first new construction project completed in the LACCD $2.3 Billion Bond Program built to a Silver Certification LEEDTM Standard.

  3. Child Development Center & Education Complex The center was designed to capture the LEEDTM (Leadership in Energy and Environment Design- Trademark) environmental categories as well as the Innovation & Design Process which addresses sustainable building expertise and design.

  5. Water Efficiency Drip Irrigation delivers water straight to the base of the plants, significantly reducing water consumption and cost using 50 – 70% less water than traditional sprinkler systems which can actually help plants mature faster with less maintenance.

Low Flow Devices Annual Water Saved (gallons per device) 1 dual flush toilet: 4, 200 1 low flow faucet: 1,700 1 waterless urinal: 40,000 45,900 Did you know by replacing just one of each standard device with a low flow device saves enough water annually to fill a swimming pool 50 feet long x 20 feet wide?

Energy Efficiency Devices Intelligent Building Controls help to provide a more productive, comfortable, and sanitary environment for indoor occupants CO2 Monitors track the level of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the air to help facilitate a balance of fresh air in the building. High levels of CO2 are a poor indication of poor indoor air quality which can cause headaches, tiredness and difficulty breathing Motion Sensor detects movement in a given area and is only on when being used to minimize unnecessary use of lights to avoid wasting energy Thermostat Localized control over air conditioning system to minimize cooling in unoccupied spaces Fire Detection Panel offers valuable information in case of an emergency. Several zones in the building can be managed through this device (fire detection, fire suppression, & ventilation control)

  8. Lighting Efficiency Daylight Sensors Are used when natural light is not available. Fluorescent Lighting A fluorescent light converts electrical power into useful light more efficiently than an incandescent light. Lower energy cost typically offsets the higher initial cost compared with incandescent lighting and fluorescent lights use less power for the same amount of light, which also last longer. Window Glazing • Energy-efficient windows come with glazing "systems" that incorporate multiple panes of glass, gas fillings, and high-tech, heat-sensitive coatings. • Reduces heat impact of direct sunlight. • Because of this heat retention, your power bills will be lower, both in summer with no air conditioning and in winter with less heating loss. • Argon or krypton — is sealed between inner and outer panes. The gas is a poor thermal conductor, so it slows the passage of heat through the glass, eliminating the need for storm windows.

Sustainable Products Photovoltaics (PV) Solar electric panels to convert the sun’s light directly into electricity; this lessens the need for creating energy through the use of wasteful fossil fuel technologies. Shading Porous textiles which filter light without completely blotting it out. Interior shading devices allow the occupant to control the amount of light being introduced into the space. Low-E Windows Low-E windows are comprised of (2) glass panes that are treated with a special coating (Argon or Krypton) to reduce the flow of heat to the interior spaces of a building. The goal is to get light in but keep heat out to reduce the need for air conditioning.
