1. June 2008: Pasteur and Koch
4. A* GRADE ANSWER (5/5)At the beginning of the nineteenth century, people had incorrect beliefs about the cause of disease. They first believed that disease was caused by miasma where the air was argued to be poisoned. Also, they believed that disease was caused by the spontaneous generation of germs that were believed to suddenly appear in the air. Equally, religious followers still believed that God caused disease to punish sins and in some areas, even an imbalance of the four humours was still blamed!
11. A* GRADE ANSWERNo I don’t agree with the statement because Pasteur is not more important than Koch in the history of medicine because both are equally important for many reasons.Pasteur discovered the germ theory which accurately explained disease by revealing that germs were constantly in the air and successfully disproved the theories of miasma and spontaneous generation and finally got rid of the four humour imbalance idea about causing disease. His research on vaccines such as rabies, chicken cholera, chickenpox and anthrax meant medicine could prevent diseases and this inspired future cures, saving lives. Pasteur’s vaccine work was only possible by using Koch’s work in the laboratory.
