  4. What is a good thesis? • A good thesis statement is a sentence (sometimes two sentences) that gives a clear idea of the main subject of your paper and the argument you are going to make • A good thesis should demonstrate the difference between an investigation and a simple retelling of facts

  5. Equation A specific subject + specific claims (your argument) = a good thesis

  6. In other words… Your answer to your topic + your reasons for coming up with that answer that you will talk about in your paper= a good thesis

  7. Questions to ask • Does my thesis answer the prompt? • Does my answer to the prompt make an actual argument? Is it claiming something beyond just what the prompt says? • Does the reader know what ALL my body paragraphs are going to be about?

Thesis Examples • The United States’ involvement in WWI was caused by three main factors, which had built up over time, making the American public finally willing to enter the war. • Manfred von Richtofen, aka the Red Baron, was a major contributing factor to the events of WWI in three ways: he was the highest scoring fighting pilot in the war for the Germans, a useful tool for propaganda artists, and a strategic instrument of the German airforce. • Lawrence of Arabia helped the British win the war by fighting against the Ottoman Empire with the Indians in what became known as the Arab Revolt • Women were considered fragile creatures before WWI, but they actually did things during the war.
