Educational Project Drivers Strategic Implementation Plan for Tsunami Mitigation Projects (Dengler, 1998) Why Education is essential to Mitigation: • Individuals must be able to take appropriate action on their own • Inadequacy of the technical information available • Information about tsunamis is highly technical and not easily accessible to emergency managers, local decision makers, and the public

  4. Goals • M&E Subcommittee develop and adopt NTHMP Educational Standards • Provide all tsunami communities with Public Education that meets NTHMP Educational Standards • Ensure all TsunamiReady Communitiesmeet NTHMP Public education standards

  5. Objectives • Focus on NTHMP Strategic Plan Educational Performance Measures • Utilize NTHMP educational infrastructure – State, Territory, and Commonwealth (STC) and TsunamiReady Program • Engage STC expertise and talent – especially professional Emergency Managers and Scientists

  6. Implementation Goal • Establish Train the TrainerPrograms (T3) to graduate qualified Tsunami Public Education Instructors • Instructors teach Community-specific Tsunami Education Workshops

  7. Implementation Objectives Establish Templates for Community-Specific Educational Workshops and T3 Programs that can be adapted to the special needs and requirements of each Partner STCs

  8. Implementation Plan Components Organizational Structure Educational Standards TsunamiReady Program Community-specific Workshops Train the Trainer (T3) Web-based Educational Resources (WERS)
