    1. 12/8/2004 MLW 2004 I’m only talking about our experiences with DDLRS. Bill Hansen has covered the DDLRS program and Helen Sherman is covering some of the screens you see in QuestionPoint. 2. 12/8/2004 MLW 2004 The National Defense University Library at Fort McNair is located on the second floor of George C. Marshall Hall. The collection consists of over 500,000 bound volumes, pamphlets, periodicals, microforms, audio visual materials, government documents, and 50,000 classified documents. The library collections emphasize national security, strategy, international relations, management, management of information resources and mobilization of national resources. This screen shows the intranet homepage for the Library. It gives access to library created information, subscription and free databases, and of course, means of communicating with the Library. The Ask-A-Librarian link that appears in the Quick Links area on the right of the screen gives access to the homegrown form our internal patrons use.The National Defense University Library at Fort McNair is located on the second floor of George C. 3. 12/8/2004 MLW 2004 We have purposefully limited the number of hours we are scheduled for DDLRS questions to 5 per week. We receive about 1200 reference questions from our internal or primary users in a month. Our DDLRS questions are about 30 per month. Give rough number per month We have purposefully limited the number of hours we are scheduled for DDLRS questions to 5 per week. 4. 12/8/2004 MLW 2004 We trained and experimented with chat. System was not stable then. Problem if it requires downloading and installing software. Couldn’t come up with a way to staff chat – even for our internal users. We trained and experimented with chat. System was not stable then. Problem if it requires downloading and installing software. 5. 12/8/2004 MLW 2004 These are things that your local administrator does before you can use the QP software. The profiles are used for routing global questions. 6. 12/8/2004 MLW 2004 Training takes time and can take money. The QP system is very complex so that it can be used in many ways by different types of groups. There is no substitute for training. OCLC offers good training through use of web-based meetings with audio provided by telephone. Little need to travel for training. Try to plan to train right before you start to use the system. You will forget things if you don’t. If you can, do more training when the system changes. Even a half hour show and tell will reduce problems if someone faces new screens or procedures after not using the system for a while.Training takes time and can take money. 7. 12/8/2004 MLW 2004 Bill Hansen has provided good materials that are located on AKO and he has sent out to libraries. Fortunately librarians are used to working cooperatively. Sharing FAQ’s, scripts, etc. saves time. Knowledge base is a good way of sharing answers. However it takes time to edit the questions and activate them. 8. 12/8/2004 MLW 2004 Since we’re no longer Army, must have sponsor for account. AKO changes a lot. Patrons only ask for what they can’t find themselves. Frustration factor Get a lot of bad email addresses.Since we’re no longer Army, must have sponsor for account. AKO changes a lot. Patrons only ask for what they can’t find themselves. 9. 12/8/2004 MLW 2004 Reference interview or clarification may be difficult or impossible. Worth a try. Give a fish or teach to fish? Script for referral and how to find legal assistance office. Don’t spin wheels trying to answer a question that is primary material for another library. No spell checker so either use Word to create answer and cut and paste into QP or save draft and proofread. Try links each time before you send to be certain they still work. Reference interview or clarification may be difficult or impossible. Worth a try. Give a fish or teach to fish? 12. 12/8/2004 MLW 2004 When CDRS started there were the second listed guidelines for behavioral performance and many of you may use them to set standards for your performance. Just this year RUSA approved the guidelines for virtual reference services. I’m pointing them out to you so that you can use them in your planning for virtual reference.
