  2. Virtualization Project • The Pilot project started in the Summer of 2007 • The Project officially kicked off in the beginning of 2009 and the target completion date is end of FY 10/11 • Projection is 75% virtualized at the end of the project • Project Scope: • Virtualize Physical server • Server Consolidation • Convert Vmware to Xen (add on 2009)

  3. Virtual Environment - Sever • First generation of standard Servers purchased are Dell 1950’s with 16 gig of memory • The second generation of standard servers purchased are Dell 1950’s with 32 gig of memory • Currently standard server is Dell R610’s with 96 gig of memory • Newer server allows more VMs on one host • One rack per year will cover the normal growth & save floor space

  4. Virtual Environment - Server • Standard Server Rack • 20 physical 1U servers • Four Cisco 3750E switches • Two stacks together with four 10G link upstream to distribution Cisco 6500E switch for Data network • Other two stacks together with four 10G link upstream to Dual distribution 6500E for Storage network • One Cisco 4948 switch for management network • Each server is connected to every switch with Ethernet bonding & all VLANs truncked • Total cost per rack is about $300K today

  5. Virtual Environment - Server • Two production racks each at ISTB1 and ECA • One development and QA rack in ISTB1 • Citrix XenServer is our VM platform of choice • Each Xen pool (a group of up to 16 physical servers) is distributed between two buildings • The VM (guest) can be migrated within a pool without outage

  6. Virtual Environment - Storage • Xen Storage • Two NetApp FAS6080 • One filer is at ECA and one at ISTB1 with MetroCluster • 300 GB fiber channel disks with RAID 6 DP and sync-mirror between two ECA and ISTB1 • Using Netapp Snapshot to backup VM • Using Netapp Snap Vault to move backup to offsite at West campus • IP SAN instead of Fiber Channel

  7. ECA ISTB1

  8. Virtualized Servers by Platform

  9. Summary • As of today : • Power consumption dropped from 70% to 44% UPS draw. • 62.5% of total servers are virtualized. • Total of 103 XenServers • Needs help from UTO to complete the rest

  10. What’s Next ? • Install second redundant Data network distribution switch at ISTB1 • Complete the project – Virtualize what we can • Exchange ? Exchange 2010 & virtualized, Outsourcing, Microsoft BPOS. • Develop Strategy for non virtualized servers due to application/vendor support issues • Build DR Site for CHS at West
