  3. “Shrek” – Status quo • Ordinary life – hero’s everyday world (beginning) • We meet Shrek living alone and happy in the swamp

  4. Call to adventure • Faced with invitation or challenge • Initially refuses the call • Lord Farquad sends fairytale creatures to swamp and Shrek doesn’t want them there

  5. Assistance/Mentor • Guide or mentor who helps hero on his journey (protect or point the way) • Hero will also have allies/helpers who journey with him (sidekick) • Donkey accompanies Shrek on his journey and overs sage advice

  6. Departure/Crossing threshold • Leaves ordinary world by crossing the threshold (known to unknown) • Shrek leaves the swamp for the forest

  7. Trials/Challenges • Challenges or temptations that try to steer hero off course • The dragon, his insecurity, dealing with donkey

  8. Approach • Hero faces biggest ordeal/greatest fear • Realizes he loves Fiona when alone back at swamp but is afraid she won’t love him

  9. Crisis/Ordeal • Hero’s darkest hour where he faces death or dies and is reborn • Having to fight for Fiona and hope she loves him back

  10. Treasure/Reward • Reward from his battle (power/knowledge) • Wins her love and realization that what matters is on the inside

  11. Result • What comes from crisis (flee/kill monster) • Farquad is eaten by dragon and he is hero Return/Atonement • Crosses threshold back to normal life • Returns to swamp with bride

  12. New life/Restoring order • Outgrown old life • Quest has changed hero and must use what he/she has learned in new life • Being happy with himself gives him better outlook on life at swamp with friends

  13. Resolution/Taking new place • Loose ends are tied up and untangled • Shrek is married, dragon stays with donkey, and fairy tale creatures are happy

  14. Status quo • Back normal but upgraded as nothing is ever the same after journey • Back at the swamp with Fiona
