  2. Gender & number of nouns • In English, nouns are either singular or plural. • In French (and Spanish), nouns are singular or plural / masculine or feminine • NUMBER: singular: one / plural: more than one • GENDER: masculine / feminine

  3. Gender & number of nouns You can apply a few simple rules to determine the gender and number of a noun. If a noun: • ends with a silent E, it’s 99% of the time feminine. • ends with an accented E, it’s 99% of the time masculine. • ends with a consonant, it’s 99% of the time masculine.

  4. Gender & number of nouns If a noun: • ends a S, it’s more than likely plural. • ends with X, it’s more than likely plural.

  6. Indefinite articles (not definite) • un – masculine/singular • ex: un chat • une – feminine / singular • ex: une chaise • des – plural • ex: des chats
