  2. Adaptation Funds • Under UNFCCC • Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF) • Special Climate Change fund (SCCF) • Under Kyoto Protocol • Adaptation Fund (AF) • Others • Special Pilot on Adaptation (SPA)

Least Developed Countries Fund • Agreed at COP7 (Marrakech Accords) • Only LDCs are eligible • Based on voluntary contributions from rich countries • Managed by GEF • Initial funding to all LDCs to carry out National Adaptation Plans for Action (NAPAs) • Total funds pledged: approx 100 Million Dollars • Procedures for applying for project funding agreed • Countries can apply for funding priority projects (identified in their completed NAPAs)

Special Climate Change Fund • Agreed at COP7 ( Marrakech Accords) • All eligible countries eligible • Based on voluntary contributions from rich countries • Funds pledged: Approx 400 Million Dollars • Activities eligible include: • Adaptation (top priority) • Mitigation • Technology Transfer • Economic Diversification

  5. Adaptation Fund • Under Kyoto Protocol • Based on “Adaptation Levy “ on CDM Projects (2% of CERs) • Discussed (but not resolved) at COP/MOP1 • On Agenda for COP/MOP2 (Nairobi)

  6. Special Pilot on Adaptation • From GEF Trust Fund • 50 Million Dollars over 3 years • All developing countries are eligible • GEF rules on “global benefits” apply • Already funding activities in a number of developing countries countries

  7. Bilateral funders • Canada (CIDA): Climate Change Fund • UK (DFID): Climate Change Adaptation in Africa • Sweden (Sida): Funding some activities on climate change in selected developing countries • Denmark (Danida):
