I. Love Defined • This is real love – by the Apostle of Love • I John 4:9-10 • Not that we loved God, but He loved us • Sent His Son as a sacrifice to take away our sin • So we might have eternal life through Him
John 3:16 • God loved so much that He gave his only son • Everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life
II. Life or Death • John 3:17-21 • Eternal life • No judgment against anyone who believes • Romans 8:1 So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. • Perish • Anyone who does not believe has been judged • Judgment based on rejection of the light
2 Corinthians 4:3-6 • People who are perishing – minds are blinded by Satan – unable to see the light of the Good News • God has made this light shine in our hearts • “Let there be light in the darkness”
Sin separates people from God and condemns them to eternal torment
Matthew 7 • V. 13-14 – the kingdom of God or hell
Hebrews 10:31 "It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God."
III. Loved to Life • 1 John 2:2 He himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins—and not only our sins but the sins of all the world. • 2 Corinthians 5:19 For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation.
Atonement • Make satisfaction for man’s offenses • Satisfies the law and justice of God • Romans 6:23 – the wages of sin is death • 1 Corinthians 15:2-3 • This good news saves you • Christ died for our sins
Matthew 26:28 for this is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many.
