Congenital Heart Defects In Children and Their Severity
Congenital heart defects have occurred since birth. Many children suffer from congenital heart defects from birth. Some of the congenital heart defects are simple and do not require any treatment. With proper nutrition, most of the minor heart defects get healed during pregnancy or after birth. But there are several defects that require medical procedures or treatment in order to live a healthy life. In complex cases, multiple surgeries are required over a period of time. Today, with advances in technology and medical procedures doctors are able to diagnose and identify any signs of congenital heart defects. This helps the doctors to provide the right nutrition and medication in order to treat the child in the fetus. And in cases where the defect is not healed in the fetus then the doctor uses surgical procedures to treat the defect. Children that have heart defects require special attention and care to prevent infection or injuries. Symptoms: ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● Swelling in legs, ankle, and around the eyes. Cyanosis (pale blue skin) Poor weight Fainting during exercise Weakness Easy fatigue Breathlessness Lung infection Inability to exercise Congenital Heart Defects Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome: Hypoplastic left heart syndrome occurs when the left side of the heart such as valves and blood vessels are underdeveloped. It is a serious disorder that requires immediate surgery soon after the birth, as it is the only option to save the child. The child suffering from this defect suffers from severe breathing difficulty and has a grey complexion. The treatment for this condition requires surgery such as Norwood operation that allows the right ventricle to pump blood and supply blood to the body and the lungs. This type of procedure is highly complicated and requires absolute precision.
Tetralogy of Fallot: It is a serious heart condition that affects the heart with four main defects as Ventricular heart defect, thickening of the wall of the right ventricle, displacement of the aorta towards the right ventricle, and thickening of the wall of the right ventricle. Children suffering from this defect are at greater health risk as the defect causes the oxygenated and deoxygenated blood to get mixed which becomes fatal to life. This type of defect requires surgery to close the path where the mixing of blood takes place. Ventricular Septal Defect: Ventricular Septal Defect is among the most common defects that occur in infants. Ventricles are present in the lower side of the heart. In Ventricular Septal Defect there is a hole in the walls between the ventricles that causes mixing of the oxygenated and deoxygenated blood that is fatal for the life of the child. The symptoms include difficulty in breathing, increased heart rate etc. The condition of the child with this syndrome gets worse with time therefore, immediate treatment is necessary. Coarctation of the aorta: In the Coarctation of the aorta, the major artery that is the aorta which is responsible to transport oxygenated blood to the entire body gets narrowed. This causes low blood pressure in the body which makes it a serious heart defect. Children suffering from this defect face a lot of difficulty in breathing and require immediate surgery within the first few weeks in order to survive.
