  2. Part I: Where on my Computer is that Document?

  3. Windows File Manager Since Windows 95 it’s been called Windows Explorer You can access Windows Explorer several ways Right click on My Computer and choose explore Right click on Start on the taskbar and choose explore Hold the windows key down and type “E”

  4. My Computer • Shows the major components on your computer • Desktop • My Documents • Drives • Networked Drives • Recycle Bin

  5. Windows Explorer mimics a file cabinet Each folder can hold sub-folders and files Can be expanded as far as needed by clicking on the plus (+) sign, click on the minus and it shrinks This allows you to organize things as finely as you want or need

  6. My Documents in LTS • Should be where you save anything you don’t want to lose • Besides your documents, your email is automatically backed up • Some such as Palm OS Desktop, Recycler and Updater5 were put there by Desktop Services. Leave them alone.

  7. User Profiles • Each user has his own folder in Documents and Settings • In each user’s folder, settings and saved data for various applications are kept

  8. Many of those settings are kept in Application Data • Each application has its own folder • If you don’t see the Application Data folder, talk to your netadmin

  9. Under Application Data is the Qualcomm folder, which has your Eudora data in it • See your attachments folder (attach) and mailboxes (.mbx files)

  10. You should periodically look in the attachments folder. Old files reside there, some you aren’t aware are there. Periodically deleting or saving them elsewhere is good file management.

  12. Where are my bookmarks? • For Firefox users, it’s located under Mozilla, then Firefox and Profiles and Default. • It’s a “loose” file outside of the other folders in default called Bookmarks.html

  13. For Internet Explorer bookmarks are located in a different folder below your user name called Favorites.

  14. Why do I need to know where my bookmarks are? They are not backed up so if your computer goes down, they are lost. So you can occasionally copy the file to somewhere that is backed up, i.e., My Documents.

  15. PART II: Moving and Manipulating Files

  16. Case I: manipulating an attachment.(file location and path can be seen in Windows Explorer)

  17. Opening it with the Enter key will not work, and you’ll get an error message:

  18. It must be imported in Voyager by browsing to the correct folder (in this case, “attach”).

  19. After locating the file, I can move it to a more appropriate Import folder in several ways: 1. Right click on the file and select “copy”, browse to destination, right-click “paste”. 2. Highlight the file and go to EditCopy, browse destination and click EditPaste 3. Highlight and use Cntrl+C, browse to destination folder and click Cntrl+V.

  23. Case II: I want to import a useful new Macro from the Server: • DO NOT Double-Click it! Instead, switch to the Macro Express program • Macro MenuImport Macros • When blank Import screen appears, select “Open File”, and browse to the appropriate macro…

  24. When I double-click to open the macro, it will appear in the Import screen

  25. Select the Macro and click ‘OK’

  26. The Macro will incorporate itself into the current macro list…

  27. Saving Documents

  28. Eudora attachments • Eudora attachments are saved automatically in : Application Data\Qualcomm\Eudora\Attach • To save an attachment in a different folder: - right click - choose save as - browse to “My Documents” folder - click “Save” • To create a new folder in “My documents” folder - right click - choose New - choose Folder

Attachments Is it safe to open an attachment? - ask yourself: Do I know the sender? “NO” - “YES” DELETE compose new email to that person, asking if he/she really meant to sent you an attachment. In any case DO NOT CLICK “REPLY” . If it is a virus you do not want to spread it. Not sure? Simply delete, and the sender will resend it to you again if it's something important.

  30. Where to save and why? Where to save new or existing documents? In My Documents. Attachments? Attach folder Why? Both the Attachment (after you log off) and My Documents (dynamically) folders are backed up How to delete docs and attachments if I do not need it any more? To delete any of your attachments: - Browse to the “Attach” folder , through My Computer /C:/Documents and Settings\yourname\Application Data\Qualcomm\Eudora\Attach - click on the document you do not need - then either click on a delete button, or do right click and choose “delete” option.

  31. How to get it back? What if I want any of the deleted documents back? A Document is going to stay in the Recycle Bin until you manually delete it: - open up your Recycle bin (on your Desktop) - right click on the document you want to restore - choose “restore” - the document will go back to its original location To delete the documents permanently from the Recycle : - hit delete key, or - right click, - choose “Empty Recycle Bin”

  32. There are several ways to save documents in MS Word. You can have your documents to be saved automatically while you are working on it:On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Save tab. Select the Save AutoRecover info every: In the minutes box, enter the interval for how often you want to save files. The more frequently your files are saved, the more information is recovered if there is a power failure or similar problem while a file is open. Saving Word/Excel Document

  33. You can save a copy of the active documents with a different name or in a different location. On the File menu, click Save As. In the File name box, enter a new name for the file. Click Save. MS Word/Excel documents by default are saved in “My Documents” folder, after you choose “save“ or “save as”. They will provide a different extensions .doc, .xls Saving Word/Excel Documents

  35. A wild card is a character that may be used in a search represent one or more other characters. The two most commonly used wild cards are: 1) The question mark (“?”) may be used to represent a single alphanumeric character in a search expression. For example, searching for the term “?ulio” would yield results which contain such words as “hulio” and “julio”. 2) An asterisk (“*”) may be used to specify one or more alphanumeric characters. For example, searching for the term “j*o” would yield results which contain such words as “job”, “jargon”, “ It is usually best to avoid using the asterisk as the first character in a search string. A search term consisting of a lone asterisk and no other alphanumeric characters will retrieve every record from the database. Wildcard search
