Lesson Plan HL Theme: Proverbial Folktales 1) Pre-requisites: Intermediate HL learners with mixed ability of literacy levels 2 ) Goal of the Unit: Students will be able to take part in the various discussions that take place in the community. 3) Content Objectives: Understand the message of the proverbs through folktales which are used in regular conversations. 4) Language Objectives: • Summarize the folktales. • Understand the usage of proverbs in a sentence. • Exchange information obtained from parents or community members. 5) Resources & Materials: • HL family, props, paper, pencils pictures & illustrations, internet • Authentic Material: You tube, Audio & Written Folktales

  3. DAY 1 Pre-Activity: Students will share their thoughts about a proverb (jo sotaa hai vo khota hai) written on the board. Via discussion teacher explains the concept of proverbs Procedures: • Students will be given a handout of the folktale in the target language. • Students will follow the script while listening to the recorded folktale. • Students will be asked to circle the words and phrases that will help them in summarizing the folktale. • While working in collaborative groups students will discuss the story and negotiate the meaning of difficult words and phrases. • Teacher facilitates learning where appropriate.

  4. Day 1 cont. 6. Differentiated Activity: • a). High literacy level learners will arrange the summary of the jumbled up story in the sequential order. • b). Low literacy level learners will do a cloze activity of the summary of the folktale and will re-arrange the summarized jumbled up story in the sequential order. • Teacher starts discussion about the message in the folktale and assists students to connect the proverb with the folktale. • A few sentences with the proverb will be given to reinforce the meaning. • Students are encouraged to create sentences by working in collaborative groups. HomeWork: • Homework: Four new proverbs are provided and students will find the meaning of any two. • Students are provided the youtube clip to get an idea of the folktales we will be discussing in class tomorrow.

DAY 2 Anguur khatte hain, Lalach burii balaa hai, do kii laraii mein teiisre kaa bhala • Review Homework • Divide class into groups on the basis of their choice of proverbs. • Give four different folk tales to four different groups. • Repeat steps one to six from day one for each group. • Students create two sentences of the proverb associated with their folk tales. • Each group will be asked to choose one from following assignments: • Create a book based on your folktale. By using PowerPoint presentation share the story and explain the proverb related with the folktale. • Write and perform a skit or puppet show, highlighting the proverb related with the folktale. • Homework: Start working on the final assignment.

  6. DAY 3 • Class will begin through discussion and students will continue to work on their project. • Teacher will provide support as needed.

  7. DAY 4 Assessment & Evaluation • Students will present their final assignment. • As a whole class meaning of different proverbs will be discussed. • By working in collaborative groups students will be asked to create sentences of each proverb.
