  3. What do I need to do to Graduate? Complete the required 26 credits. (Review the handout given to you) Pass your 4 EXIT level TAKS tests (English, Math, Science, Social Studies) See your counselor for additional information.

  4. What am I going to do after I Graduate? Attend a 4-Year College Attend a 2-year College Join the military Attend a Trade School Enter the Workforce

  5. How do I decide which colleges to apply? Apply to at least 3 schools. Is the college a good fit for you? Utilize the College room in the library to do your research. Talk to people who have gone to colleges you are considering. Do they offer majors and programs that interest you?

  6. May I miss to visit a college? • Yes. You are allowed TWO college visits outside of the school day that will not count against your attendance. • Two can be utilized in your junior and senior year for a total of 4. • Your unused college visits from junior year will NOT carry over. • You must provide appropriate documentation from the college with the following : • Official College Letterhead • Date of Visit • College Representative Signature • Please give this documentation to Mrs. Knight

  8. How do I apply to college? Apply online as instructed on the college website. PROOF READ your entire application including essay (if required). Ask for additional feedback by having someone else proofread your essays/application. Print & Submit application with all supporting documents: SAT /ACT Scores are sent to the University(s) of your choice from the testing agency Request Transcripts to be sent to your colleges Pay all required Application Fees

  11. How do I obtain Scholarships? From the KPHS Website, select “Our Schools” at the top tab Select College -Career Room/Scholarships Scholarships are added as we get information. Apply for everything in which you are eligible for. Watch For Deadlines!!

  12. How do I apply for Financial Aid? FAFSA(Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is an application for grants, student loans, parent loans and many scholarships. www.fafsa.gov Apply for your PIN between now and December 2013. Students and parents need a PIN for Electronic Signature.

  14. What test do I have to take to get into college? Texas Success Initiative (TSI) is a state legislated program designed to improve student success in college. Prior to enrolling in college, TSI requires all entering college students to be assessed for college readiness in reading, writing and math. You can utilize the following for exemptions: SAT/ACT, TAKS and other assessments www.collegeboard.org/texas-sample-questions SAT and ACT- End of junior year/beginning of Senior year. Students must request testing agency to send scores to colleges. SAT Subject TEST- Take at completion of highest level of the subject. Required for admission to some colleges and for some majors.

  15. What test do I have to take to get into college? www.collegeboard.com SAT/AP Testing Info Scores can be sent directly to schools www.actstudent.org ACT Testing Scores can be sent directly to schools Allow 4-6 weeks to for score reports to be processed. Test scores are NOT on your transcript.

  16. How do I send an official transcript to my college(s) See Mrs. Valenta or Mrs. Garrrett in the registrar’s office. Any electronic transcript sent to a college(s) in the state of Texas is free. Any electronic transcript sent outside of Texas is $2.00 To request an official transcript that you are mailing yourself to a college and/or scholarship application(s) is $1.00 per transcript.

  17. How do I send an official transcript to my college(s) The registrars do not mail transcripts for scholarships. This is done by the student. Please allow 48 hours for a transcript request.

  18. Where can I obtain my rank and GPA? You can obtain your rank and GPA from your counselor. Ranks and GPA are based off of 9th -12th year’s grades. They are also located on your transcript. Rank and GPA’s will be updated at the end of January to include Fall 2013 grades. Final Rank and GPA will be determined at the last grading period.

  19. Top 10% Rule Texas House Bill 588, commonly referred to as the "Top 10% Rule", is a Texas law passed in 1997. The law guarantees Texas students who graduated in the top ten percent of their high school class have automatic admission to all state-funded universities. University of Texas in Austin will take the top 7%.

  20. Continued……. Students who do not rank in the top 10% are reviewed for admissions and may be admitted based on rank, & SAT/ACT scores. Some Colleges have alternative admissions programs which provide a gateway to entrance at the college Example: EX-CAP (UT Austin), Summer Gateway (Texas Tech) Contact the college and speak to an admissions counselor for any questions regarding acceptance.

  21. What if I am attending Community College or a Trade School? Apply online in the Spring by March 1st (recommended) TAKS scores can be used for admission if the score is high enough. Confer with the college you plan to attend to complete additional testing if required. Please contact the community college or Trade school for additional information.

  22. How can my Counselor help? Starting the second week in October 2013, the counselors will meet with each of you individually for 15-20 minutes to briefly review: Credits College Application Questions/Status Senior Packet Questions about College/Community College/Trade School etc. Transcripts ACT/SAT/TSI Testing Bridges Career Exploration Please make a list of questions to bring to your Senior meeting. We are here for you!! Please stop by our office anytime!!

  23. WWW.GOTOCOLLEGEFAIRS.COM You register ONE TIME, and you get a barcode you can take to anyof the automated fairs . Put an end to filling out info cards at every table. Instead, spend your time talking with the schools and finding out what YOU want to know.
