About the Author • Jon Krakauer was born in Brookline, Massachusetts, in 1954. • His family moved to Corvallis, Oregon, when he was two. • When he was eight years old, his father took him to (unsuccessfully) climb Oregon's ten-thousand-foot South Sister, sparking Krakauer's lifelong obsession with mountaineering.

  3. About the Author . . . • Krakauer received a degree in environmental studies from Hampshire College and worked as a carpenter and a commercial fisherman to support his climbing. • In 1983 Krakauer quit his job as foreman of a house-building crew to concentrate on writing.

  4. About Into the Wild • In 1992, a party of moose hunters found the decomposing body of a young man in the Alaskan wilderness. • Outside magazine asked Krakauer to write about this young man, Chris McCandless, a bright idealist from Washington, D.C. • Many readers thought McCandless was a reckless fool; others sympathized with his spiritual quest. • Krakauer saw a lot of himself in McCandless. • A year after the article was published, Krakauer couldn't get McCandless out of his mind and decided to write Into the Wild, Krakauer's first bestseller.

  5. Other Works by Krakauer • On May 10, 1996, Krakauer climbed Mount Everest with an expedition of twenty-three people. An afternoon blizzard hit the peak, and eight people lost their lives. • Krakauer's Outside article on the climb won the 1996 National Magazine Award for Reporting. • Into Thin Air, his book on the experience, was on the bestseller list for two years and in 1998 Krakauer used some of the royalties to establish the Everest '96 Memorial Fund. • The book was a finalist for both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award. • In 2007, Sean Penn directed the movie version of "Into the Wild."

Other Works by Krakauer . . . • For his next book, he wanted to write about the extremes of faith. • When Krakauer was granted an interview with Dan Lafferty--a fundamentalist Mormon who had slain his sister-in-law and niece in a ritual murder--he knew he had found the narrative through which to tell his story. • The book received mixed reviews, with a number of critics faulting him for ignoring Mormonism's positive characteristics. The Mormon Church issued a five-page, single-spaced rebuttal of the book two weeks before publication. • Krakauer defended his reporting and accused the church of whitewashing its history. "I wanted to write about how they dealt with their history. I didn't realize how rankled they would become about it."

Other Works by Krakauer . . . • Jon Krakauer's pride was wounded by his editor's lukewarm reaction to an early draft of, Under the Banner of Heaven (2003). • After having published Into the Wild (1996) and Into Thin Air (1997), Krakauer's two bestselling works of adventure writing, the editor was puzzled by this grisly tale of a 1984 ritual murder, punctuated with long chapters on the history of Mormonism. • "Where are the mountains?" she asked.

Other Works by Krakauer . . . • What she didn't appreciate was that Under the Banner of Heaven was a continuation, not a departure, from Krakauer's central themes: the delicate balance between faith and reason as seen through individuals who are drawn to extremes. • Rather than rework the book, Krakauer switched publishers and Under the Banner of Heaven became his third bestseller. *Adapted from http://www.newnewjournalism.com/bio.php?last_name=krakauer

Pre-Reading Activity • Into the Wild is a nonfiction, full-length text by Jon Krakauer. • Published in 1996, it is based on an article Krakauer wrote in Outside Magazine about Christopher McCandless, a young college graduate who went off to Alaska and died in the woods. • Because Krakauer’s article drew a huge amount of mail to the magazine, he decided to write a book about this interesting character.

  10. Pre-Reading Activity . . . • He’s a young, idealistic guy who forms a life philosophy based on his experience and his reading in college. • His idealism, ironically, leads to his death by starvation. He makes choices that seem foolish as we look at them now. • But McCandless genuinely loved the outdoors and wanted to live in the world without all the trappings of money and his middle-class upbringing. • Into the Wild is, in a way, a mystery story. We’re unsure as to why he rejects his family, why he’s so angry with them, and why he chooses to head for Alaska.

  11. Quickwrite: • Think about your experience hiking, backpacking, and/or existing in the wild. What are the benefits of any one of these activities? or • Think about some alternative plans you might have to beginning college immediately after high school. What might you do? Why would you do it, and for how long could you see yourself doing that activity? or • Think about an experience you have had when you were alone and made some misjudgments that could have led to disaster but didn’t (it doesn’t have to be in the outdoors). What miscalculations did you make and how did you avert disaster?

Introducing Key Concepts • We know about characters from their actions, their thoughts, what they say, their appearance, and what others say about them. • This book explores a character, Chris McCandless, and the actions he takes. • Before reading about him, complete this pre-reading activity. • Read the scenarios below and use specific words to describe the character in the scenario. • In groups, you will compare your lists, then turn in your finalized list of descriptive words to your teacher.

  13. Introducing Key Concepts . . . • Mary was from the Valley. She used the word “like” in front of most of her adjectives when she spoke and talked quite a bit. On her 16th birthday she expected to get a car. It was a given. Her friends thought she would get a pink Maserati, but she was sure her parents would buy her the candy-apple red Alfa Romeo. The day of her birthday came, and as she peered out her bedroom window, she noticed a new car in the driveway, but it was yellow— surely not hers. She thought it may have been the new cleaning woman’s. She did not see any other car in the long driveway. She ran down to get a closer look. It was a new canary-colored convertible Volkswagen bug. On the front driver’s-side seat was a birthday note to her. She burst into tears and ran into the house. • Words to describe Mary: ______________________________________________________

  14. Introducing Key Concepts . . . • Vandana had a comfortable life. Not unlike her friends, Vandana had gone to school and done well and soon was to attend the university. She had received several scholarships and her parents had planned to pay the rest for her education. Vandana hoped to help people in her future career, but hadn’t quite decided in which field she wanted to do this. She decided to take a year off before attending college. Her parents refused her this. She worked hard the summer before she was to go to college, and made enough money for a one way ticket to India. She had been interested in the life of Buddha and wanted to learn more about him. Leaving a note for her parents, she headed off to India, in hopes of discovering a spiritual and centered path for herself. • Words to describe Vandana: ______________________________________________________

  15. Introducing Key Concepts . . . • Emory was very popular and made friends easily. People were drawn to his honest nature and his free spirit. It was odd when two of his classmates saw drawings he had made to build bombs in his math notebook. It was even odder when he took off one day without a word to his teachers or friends. His parents notified the police. When they did a search of his room, they found two small guns and threatening notes he had written to a former girlfriend a year earlier. • Words to describe Emory: _____________________________________________

  16. Surveying the Text • Count the number of chapters in the text. • Read a few of the chapter titles. • Read a few of the short epigraphs that come before a chapter begins. (An epigraph is a relevant quotation at the beginning of a book,a chapter, etc.) • Look at the length of the book. • Look at any maps or photographs. • Identify the author and publication date. • What other works has Krakauer written? Do you know of them? • Have you read them?

  17. Surveying the Text . . . Author’s Note • Many readers skip the author’s note that begins a book, but this note by Krakauer is particularly interesting and will guide your reading of his book. • Read the three-page author’s note before you begin to read the work. • Then form groups of three or four and discuss the following questions: • What might McCandless’s motives have been for his behavior (paragraph 3)? • How difficult would it be to invent a new life?

  18. Making Predictions and Asking Questions • Find an issue of Outside Magazine and write a one-page report describing the magazine, its audience, the kinds of articles it publishes, and so forth. Then ask yourself these questions: • Why do you think Krakauer wrote this particular book? • Who do you think is the intended audience for this book? *Note that the book’s roots can be found in a long article about McCandless in Outside Magazine.

  19. Surveying the Text . . . • In paragraph 4, Krakauer introduces some themes of the book. Discuss these themes. • In paragraph 5, Krakauer warns us that he will not be an impartial biographer. What does this mean? Are all biographers impartial? What might we expect from Krakauer? • In the last paragraph, Krakauer introduces the complexity of Chris McCandless. Keep in mind the following four questions as you read the text: 1. Should we admire McCandless for his courage and noble ideas? 2. Was he a reckless idiot? 3. Was he crazy? 4. Was he an arrogant and stupid narcissist?

Transcendentalism • Transcendentalism is an American literary, political, and philosophical movement of the early nineteenth century, centered around Ralph Waldo Emerson. • Other important transcendentalists were Henry David Thoreau, Margaret Fuller, Amos Bronson Alcott, Frederic Henry Hedge, and Theodore Parker. • Stimulated by English and German Romanticism, the Biblical criticism of Herder and Schleiermacher, and the skepticism of Hume, the transcendentalists operated with the sense that a new era was at hand.

  21. Transcendentalism . . . • They were critics of their contemporary society for its unthinking conformity, and urged that each individual find, in Emerson's words, “an original relation to the universe” (O, 3). • Emerson and Thoreau sought this relation in solitude amidst nature, and in their writing. • By the 1840s they, along with other transcendentalists, were engaged in the social experiments of Brook Farm, Fruitlands, and Walden; and, by the 1850's in an increasingly urgent critique of American slavery.

  22. Transcendentalism . . . • 19th-century movement of writers and philosophers in New England who were loosely bound together by adherence to an idealistic system of thought based on a belief in the essential unity of all creation, the innate goodness of man, and the supremacy of insight over logic and experience for the revelation of the deepest truths. German transcendentalism (especially as it was refracted by Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Thomas Carlyle), Platonism and Neoplatonism, the Indian and Chinese scriptures, and the writings of such mystics as Emanuel Swedenborg and Jakob Böhme were sources to which the New England Transcendentalists turned in their search for a liberating philosophy.

Reading Chapters 1 and 2: The Beginning and the End • Note the epigraphs that begin each of these chapters. • One is by a friend of Chris McCandless and the other is by McCandless, followed by a quotation from White Fang, by Jack London. In a notebook, keep track of the literary quotations that Krakauer uses in his epigraphs. • Make note of all the maps that begin the text. • What is your assessment of Chris McCandless so far? • Keep notes as you read, ask questions of the text, and write down your reactions.

  24. Reading Chapters 1 and 2: The Beginning and the End • Students will review the epigraphs that begin each chapter. • The first is from a postcard that McCandless wrote to a friend; the next epigraph quotes graffiti he carved into a piece of wood and has a quotation from White Fang by Jack London as well. • How are these epigraphs relevant to these chapters?

  25. Reading Chapter 3: Home • How are the epigraphs relevant to this chapter? • What was Westerberg like? What kind of character did he have? • What was McCandless like? What kind of character did he have? Would you have liked to know him?

  26. Reading Chapters 4–7: The Journey • Study the map that begins Chapter 4 and refer to it as you follow McCandless’s journey. • Jot down answers to the following as you read these chapters: • In your notebook, list the people McCandless met along the way. • What was it about McCandless’s personality that made an impression on people? • Note Alex’s journal. Why do you think he avoided using the first person when he talked about himself? Why doesn’t he use the pronoun “I”?

  27. Reading Chapter 7: The Journey • Reread the notes Alex sent to his friends at the end of Chapter 7. • What is his tone? • What is his attitude?

  28. Reading Connection • Quickwrite: • Reflect on your understanding of Thoreau’s “On the Duty of Civil Disobedience.” Why was Chris McCandless so drawn to such writing? How were McCandless’s values and beliefs similar to those of Thoreau?

  29. Reading Chapters 8–10: The Outcasts • What is the function of these chapters? What is their relationship to the rest of the text? • Why did Krakauer interrupt the McCandless story with Chapters 8 and 9? • Were you surprised that McCandless left trails so that the authorities could find out who he was? • What’s in a name? Does it matter that we have the name we were given by our parents? How do names matter? Does your name fit you? If not, what name would you choose? Why?
