  2. Plymouth Colony • 1st Northern colony • Near present day Boston • William Bradford is founder/leader • Was its own colony from 1620-1691 when it became part of Massachusetts Bay Colony • 1st Thanksgiving (53)

  3. “A City Upon a Hill” • Massachusetts Bay Colony (1630) • Founder is John Winthrop • Winthrop called the colony a “City Upon a Hill” b/c: he wanted the colony to be an example • Mass. General Court: elected legislature • The Great Migration: 1620-43 20,000 ppl came to MBC

  4. Connecticut • In the MBC Church & State were not separated. • Thomas Hooker is a minister who: wanted to keep religion and politics separate • Fundamental Orders of Connecticut is: the countries 1st written constitution It did 2 things (1) Expands voting rights (2) separates church and state

  5. Rhode Island • Roger Williams also leaves Massachusetts & establishes Rhode Island • He believed 2 things (1) Separation of church and gov’t (2) Paying for land • Most tolerant colony of other northern colonies

  6. New Hampshire • Anne Hutchinson was a woman who believed: everyone should be able to read the Bible w/o a preacher • She is banished from MBC: this was a very radical idea • Lives in Rhode Island for a time • Later a family member forms: A new, tolerant, colony • NH starts as a RoyalColony which means: it’s under the direct control of the king

  7. Life in New England • Public education starts: in this region • Colonial Gov’t was: elected and very important • Native relations change for 2 reasons • Natives have guns • Colonists don’t need: as much help from Native Amers. anymore • Pequot War: (56) • King Philip’s War: (56)
